Come into the Irish Village, and make yourself at home come into the Village, sure you won't be on your own. There's Larry Bradley and Pat Kelly waiting to welcome you There's even MotherMcGinty, who wouldn't know the taste of water. There's legs of lamb, there's bread and jam, there's corn beef and there's veal, there's a sit-down tea with plenty ofcraic at every bloomin 'meal So if you 're Lrish, you 're sure of a welcome for there's a hooley on at the Lrish Village tonight You 're all invited... to the best hooley in Grey Cup town!
[Thanks to John Cronin of the group Killarney for the original words to Hannigan's Hooley re-arranged by The Celtic Connection to fit the occasion.]
HEY'KE getting ready for a party in Ottawa. And it's not a political party! The capital city is gearing up to welcome anywhere from 60,000 to 100,000 Grey Cup revellers to the annual sporting event that kicks off on November 1 7 and runs through to the championship game on November 21.
With reports of some Calgary fans bringing their horses to the event, it might be a good idea for the Chateau Laurier to roll up those carpets... you never know what those wild ones from the west will do!
Traditionally the city hosting the Grey Cup has a parade but because of cost and competition there will be no Grey Cup Parade 2004in Ottawa. Instead, there are all kinds of smaller events planned and taking place at Lansdowne Park, the multi-purpose facility which includes Frank Clair Stadium.
It will be Grey Cup party time in Ottawa for the whole week. And, sure, who knows better than the Irish how to throw a hooley! One of the biggest pub crawls will be taking place in the historicByWardMarket area of Ottawa, and the Irish Village group of pubs is smack dab in the heart of Canada's capital city.
The Canadian Football League (CFL) and Molson Canada have selected nine local restaurants to depict one of each of the nine CFL Teams.
They have set up an agreement with Reebok to outfit these locations as official "Grey Cup Headquarters. " Three of these locations are The Earl of Sussex, the Aulde Dubliner and the Irish Village which will each represent one of nine CFL Teams.
Omagh-born Larry Bradley and Galway-born partner Pat Kelly are the owners of the Irish Village, which is four pubs in one, the Heart and Crown, the Snug Pub, the Black Rose and Mother McGinty's, which are located at 67 Clarence Street.

Bradley and Kelly also own The Black Thorn Cafe, Earl of Sussex, the Aulde Dubliner and the Pour House. These establishments are all within walking distance of one another.
Larry Bradley is known as the 'Mayor of The Irish Village" while Pat Kelly is very involved with the Ottawa Gaels Gaelic football club and also the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA).
What a success story for these two Irish-bom entrepreneurs! Larry and Pat started Bradley & Kelly Construction Company in the early Seventies. Then, they purchased an existing small pub in the historic ByWard Market area, renovated it and opened it as an Irish pub, calling it the Heart and Crown.
As property became available around the Heart and Crown, Larry and Pat purchased more buildings, renovating them into additional Irish pubs and recently they expanded into Kingston, Ontario, where they have added the Merchant MacLiam Restaurant and Pub to the Irish Village Pub Group. Who knows what's next!

The Celtic Connection recently spoke with Rachelle O'Connor, Director of Marketing for the Irish Village Pub group to ask her how they are preparing for thousands of energetic party-goers soon to descend on them.
She said, "we're really proud to support this event...it's great for the community and we have lots of fun happening here. For instance, if you arrive in Ottawa and don't have tickets to the Grey Cup, you could win give-away tickets at the Irish Village. If you think you can make a pretty good Bloody Caesar, then you might want to take part in our Bloody Caesar contest with a chance to win your tickets.
"We also have big screen televisions set up in all the Irish Village locations and there will be a chance to meet and greet the alumni players of the past and the football players of the present.
"There will be a Heart and Crown crew going from the Lansdowne location and throughout the city restaurants and pubs doing an Irish trivia with a chance to win t-shirts emblazoned with the Heart and Crown logo along with the Grey Cup 2004 logo.
"We will also be hosting a chili cook off, a chowder cook off, andpancake breakfast and we will have lots of Grey Cup pub food specials available throughout. In addition, we will feature live entertainment every night, with lots of bands from the East Coast ready to provide that toe-tapping music to keep the energy level high throughout the festivities. "
The chili and ribs are hot, the beer is cold and the welcome mat is out at the Irish Village to welcome Grey Cup party-goers. You betcha! ...Yahoo. •

There's Gold in the Hills: It's a Celtic Klondike
GORTIN, County Tyrone - A quiet village is at the centre of a gold rush after a Canadian company discovered what is expected to be the largest deposit of the ore ever found in Ireland.
The Curraghinalt mine, in the Sperrin Mountains, near Gortin, County Tyrone is forecast to yield one million ounces of the precious ore. With gold fetching $413 an ounce, the deposit is estimated to be worth at least E400 million, more than a half of which will be spent on extraction.
While it has been speculated over the centuries that Ireland might be mineral rich, this is the first time that evidence of a vein that could lead to a "Celtic Klondike" has been produced.
The find was made on October 14 by Tournigan Gold Corporation, a Vancouver-based mining company which bought the exploration rights from another company, Ennex, last year. It will begin extracting the mineral within two years.
