Ireland Extends Greetings Following U.S. Election
n OLLOWING the United States election, leaders from around the world conveyed good wishes to the White House Administration. The following is the statement released by Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahem:
"I have conveyed my warmest congratulations to President George W. Bush on his re-election as President of the United States and my best wishes to him in addressing the challenges over the next four years. I have also conveyed my best wishes for the future to Senator John Kerry.
"The contribution which people of Irish heritage have made to the
United States, and the strong tradition of friendship and goodwill between us, is a source of enormous pride to us.
"Today, as our connections and links continue to expand in a broad range of areas of mutual interest, I look forward to working with the President to ensure that these continue to develop and flourish in the years ahead.
"We were honoured to host the EU-US summit at Dromoland Castle earlier this year in our role as Presidency of the European Union. On that occasion we agreed on a number of measures for enhancing future co-operation between Europe and the United States.
"It is both in the interests of the
Union and the United States that our relationship is strong and that we work together across the range of issues that face the international community at this time.
"The United States has always been a firm and loyal friend of the peace process. This support is a source of great encouragement as we continue to work to ensure that the Agreement is implemented in full, and above all, allowed to achieve its promise of delivering a better future for all the people of Northern Ireland.
I look forward to building even closer relations with the United States both at national level and at the level of the European Union and once again wish the President, his family and his team every success in the term ahead."
Record Number of U.S. Soldiers Through Shannon
DUBLIN - Record numbers of United States troops are going through Shannon Airport this year as the facility continues to play a role in the United States war effort in Iraq.
In spite of U.S. President Bush announcing in May 2003 that major hostilities had ended in Iraq, the number of U.S. troops using facilities at Shannon Airport en route to the Gulf and other U.S. bases surpassed last year's figure of125,000 before the end of October.
The numbers for 2004 have already breached the 100,000 barrier, with 112,803 troops going through Shannon on 1,114 flights in the nine months to the end of September. This is a 17 percent increase on the 96,403 troops that passed through Shannon for the corresponding period last year during the war.
The numbers in recent months have shown a steady increase, with
the highest monthly figure going through in September, with 22,525 troops stopping off on 150 flights at Shannon. This followed 14,830 going through in August and 11,932 in July.
By the end of this year, it is expected that just under 350,000 U.S. troops will have passed through Shannon in the past three years.
Referring to unconfirmed reports that al-Qa'ida suspects have been transported to the U.S. through Shannon, Green Party Leader Trevor Sargent said that Ireland's credibility as a responsible member of the UN is irretrievable if it turns a blind eye to what is happening at Shannon Airport.
He said, "It is bad enough that a belligerent force is allowed stop off in uniform in the State while engaging in a war effort, but it opens up a whole new chapter if people who are being unlawfully detained are being transported through Ireland. "
Irish Americans Protest Ill-Treatment
NEWYORK-Agroup of leading Irish Americans has issued ajoint letter of protest concerning the plight of Irish immigrants living in the United States. The letter - a response to the alleged ill-treatment of Irish immigrants following a change of security laws - has been sent to representatives in both legislative houses, the Senate and Congress.
Among the signatories are eight leading Irish Americans including Father Sean McManus - President of the Irish National Caucus - as well as members of the Irish American Unity Committee. Father McManus said that the letter was a protest against the Patriot Act and its anti-immigration provisions on behalf of Americans and Irish Americans. "We are writing the letter for Irish Americans but mainly for Americans.
"We see the Patriot Act as contradicting longstanding American principles, it violates fundamentals such as the right to free speech. It sends out a chilling message to society. " The legislation - passed in response to the September 11 attacks in New York, Washington and Virginia -gives various law enforcement agencies supplementary powers when dealing with a terrorist threat. The implication of these new measures is said by Father MacManus to be, "alarming. "
"If some guy, not a judge, just any guy thinks that someone from, say Mayo, is supporting terrorism, he can then be deported. This is alarming to many people. Not just Irish Americans, " he said.
The letter states that the legislation was not what the 9-11 Commission - setup to investigate the attacks - recommended. It goes on to ask for the provisions dealing with immigrants to be removed. "Wejoin with the 9-11 Commission, and the many 9-11 families in asking you to remove these extraneous provisions and pass a bi-partisan bill that follows the actual recommendations of the 9-11 Commission. "
Irish Navy Pays Homage to Submarine
Fire Victim
SLIGO - Canadian Combat Systems Engineer Lieutenant Chris Saunders (32) died as a British helicopter flew three crewmen to Ireland for emergency treatment following a fire aboard the submarine, HMCS Chicoutimi, 100 miles off the Donegal coast on October 6.
The condition of the other two crew members, Petty Officer Second Class Denis Lafleur (41) and Master Seaman Archibald MacMaster (41), was reported as "stable" in Sligo General Hospital and continuing to improve. Both were expected to be discharged following treatment for smoke inhalation.
At Dublin Airport, a guard-of-honour of 30 sailors from the Irish Naval Service bowed heads and reversed rifles as eight officers from the Canadian navy, including close friends of Lieutenant Saunders, carried his casket to a waiting Canadian Forces CC-150 Polaris jet transport. Alone Navy piper led the cortege across the ramp at Dublin Airport.
The Polaris aircraft, from the Canadian Forces 437 Squadron, landed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where an honour guard met the casket. Lieutenant Saunders, who is survived by his widow Gwen, and their two boys, Ben (2) and seven-week-old Luke, was given a military funeral following the return of his body.
The Canadian military is planning its own inquiry into the tragedy, while the Canadian Government also agreed to a parliamentary inquiry into the fatal fire after mounting political pressure.
