Steel Fence Around Holyrood
A perimeter steel fence is to be built around the Scottish Parliament building and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh over the period of the G8 summit at Gleneagles in July. This is in anticipation of violence from some of those who will descend on Scotland to protest large corporations and globalization. Discussions on internet websites which call for "bringing Scotland to its knees" have raised considerable concern and authorities are trying to minimize disruption.
Upwards of 100,000 people are expected at a "Make Poverty History" march in the capital on July 2. The Queen has dropped plans to stay at Holyrood during the summit, cancelling a summer garden party as a consequence. MacDonald's food outlets, often a target for violent protestors, are likely to close in the city over the period of the marches. The heads of state attending the G8 conference have a large agenda including the future of Africa and global warming.
Smoking Ban Given Green Light
The Scottish Parliament has approved the legislation which will introduce a ban on smoking in any pub, restaurant or club in Scotland from April next year. The Smoking, Health and Social Care (Scotland) Bill will see that licensees and others who fail to enforce the law could face fines of up to £2,500 and persistent smokers who defy the ban could be fined up to SI,000. Health Minister Andy Kerr, supporting the legislation, said that apart from the thousands who die or suffer from smoking related illnesses, tobacco smoke is associated in Scotland with the deaths of over 800 people who have never smoked as a result of "passive smoking." The licensed trade association had called for a limited ban and suggested that as a consequence of the new law, 150 pubs will be forced to close and more than 2,000jobs will be lost.
UK Petrol Prices Hit Record High
When UK petrol prices hit 85.3p a litre in 2000, truck drivers organized blockades at oil terminals in protest at government plans to raise taxes on fuel - already the highest in Europe. Now prices have soared again
and reached a record high of 85. 6p a litre and are likely to reach 90p a litre in the near future as world oil prices go even higher by the summer. Based on the current rate of exchange, 90p a litre is roughly equivalent to US$6.56 per U.S. gallon. Around 75 percent of the cost of petrol in Britain is government tax.
New Culloden Centre Announced
The existing visitor centre at the battlefield of Culloden, east of Inverness, was built in 1970. Although it was upgraded in 1984, it is still very cramped and out-dated. Now the National Trust for Scotland has received approval for a new £7 million state-of-the-art centre. This will have a grass roof giving visitors a clear view of the battlefield where Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite supporters were defeated by government troops led by the Duke of Cumberland.
It was the last battle fought on British soil and the new centre will allow the public to experience the drama and fear of taking part in the battle by taking on the character of various participants in the battle. They will wear an electronic bracelet which will trigger audio visual information points relating to their character. The new centre should be open in time for the Highland Year of Culture in 2007. However, the project maybe delayed if Historic Scotland call in the plan - they have expressed concerns that it will be too close to graves and the battlefield memorial.
New Artefact Finds at Culloden Site
Nearly 260 years after the Battle of Culloden, the site of the last battle of the unsuccessful Jacobite Uprising of 1745/46, archaeologists are still uncovering artefacts from the battle site. Researchers from Glasgow University and the Highland Historical Research Society were working on an area of the battlefield which had not previously been excavated and reported a series of "exciting" finds including part of a bayonet, a mortar shell and a pewter crucifix amulet, probably from the Western Isles.
The mortar shell showed that it had been fired at infantry to break up a Jacobite charge on that part of the battlefield. The finds will be included in a definitive book about the battle which is to be published in time for the official opening of a new visitor centre at the site which is due to open officially on April 16, 2007, the 261st anniversary of the battle.
