Zeta Jones Signs Up to Play Irish Party Girl and Drug Victim
DUBLIN - Catherine Zeta Jones is to play the lead role in the movie version of the novel Rachel's Holiday by Irish author Marian Keyes. While other works by Keyes have been televised, this is the first time one of her novels gets the silver screen treatment.
The star has signed up to play the part of Rachel, an Irish party girl in New York who ends up back in Ireland in a drug rehab program after she accidentally overdoses in her Manhattan apartment.
In Rachel's Holiday, the heroine finds herself headed for The Cloisters, an Irish drug rehabilitation program, in the belief that it is full of celebrities and will be a free holiday.
Having lost her job, her best friend and her boyfriend, she checks into rehab to find that it's shabby and run down. It is light on luxuries and, to add insult to injury, she has to deal with early morning kitchen duty.
The novel has been described as a coming of age journey of love and self discovery and is one of a stable of hugely successful novels by Keyes including Last Chance Saloon andLucy Sullivan is Getting Married.
In its review, Publishers Weekly described the author's take on addiction as "insightful and
compassionate," while Publishing News heralded it as "definitely another bestseller." The author herself has experienced rehab first hand - Keyes developed a drinking problem in her late twenties and after a suicide attempt checked into rehab.
The film, which is currently in pre-production and is set to be released next year, will be directed by Francesca Joseph for Working Title films - the company behind the smash hit Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Accused Guerin Murderer Released
DUBLIN - A man whose conviction for the murder of j ournalist Veronica Guerin was overturned on appeal was released from jail on May 19. Paul Ward (41) was sentenced to life imprisonment for the shooting of Guerin in June 1996, but won his appeal before the Court of Criminal Appeal.
Ward, from Crumlin, Dublin, had to remain in jail to serve out a 12-year sentence for his part in the Mountjoy prison siege in 1997. This sentence was subsequently reduced by two years on appeal and with remission he has now been set free by the authorities in Portlaoise jail. It is alleged Ward was a member of the drug trafficking gang, led by John Gilligan who was accused of masterminding the Guerin murder.

Both Karin Stark, who was married to Dave Allen for 18 months, and baby Cullum are reported to be doing well.
