Triumphant Return to 'Home Ground' for Champion SFU Pipe Band
ANCOUVER - This year is the 40th anniversary of Simon Fraser University, and the world-beating pipe band that carries its name has decided to do something very special to mark the anniversary.
For the last 25 years, the SFU Pipe Band has carried the university colours to competitions and concert halls around the world, with notable success. The four-time World Pipe Band Champions have won many awards and accolades, and have played and recorded in some of the best concert halls in the world.
SFU was the first pipe band to play a full concert and record a CD at New York's esteemed Carnegie Hall, and the band followed this with a CD from the Sydney Opera House in Australia! Since that CD, the band has given major concerts in Belfast, Glasgow, Halifax, Toronto and other centres.
With all that traveling, and all those successes, the band decided to take this summer to honour the University that has so profoundly affected the band's success over the years. "We owe so much to the fantastic, long-term support of Simon Fraser University," says Pipe Major Terry Lee. "We could not have achieved such success without the
backing of such a tremendous institution."
The band will be presenting three live concerts in the Theatre at SFU on June 30, July 1 and July 2, and they will be recorded and produced into two CDs called On Home Ground. After all the traveling, the band is very pleased to be playing on Burnaby Mountain for its closest supporters and fans.
"We're really excited to play these concerts at home," says Lee. "We have prepared a great new program - this is no ordinary pipes and drums show. We have a full range of Celtic instrumentation - pipes, drums, smallpipes, fiddles, keyboards, guitar, whistles, world percussion - this is a show that we are very proud to present on home ground."
The band will be pulling out all the stops for these concerts, and has a unique presentation for each night of the series. From traditional airs to Pachelbel's Canon, the band will be showcasing not only its ability as a pipe band, but also the varied musical abilities and tastes of its members and special guests.
The CD will be released in North America at the Pacific Northwest Highland Games in July, and at the Glasgow International Festival of Piping in Glasgow in August. Special autographed copies are available for pre-sale through the SFU Pipe Band web site.
Tickets are available from Ticketmaster at www.ticketmaster.ca, by telephone at (604) 280-4444, or at the SFU Pipe Band web site at: www. sfupipeband. com.
Dylan Thomas Circle Members Loved the Words
By EIFION ROBERTS
VANCOUVER - Members of the Dylan Thomas Circle of Vancouver spent an enjoyable evening on May 13 at the Red Dragon, Cambrian Hall, sharing in a multimedia presentation called Love the Words. The program was conceived and organized by Circle members Don Thomas, Neville Thomas and David Webb.
Part of the program consisted of sound and film recordings of works by Dylan, performed by well-known Welsh actors Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones, together with recordings of Dylan reading his own work.
Neville Thomas reminded the audience that there are no filmed records of Dylan Thomas but that the sound of the poet's voice made it easier to "love the words."
Members of the Circle also contributed to the evening's entertainment. Jeanette Maclean, Tora Anderson and Phillip Thatcher read some of Thomas' well-known poems and prose excerpts.
The last part of the program consisted of excerpts from the London and Newark performances of Under Milk Wood, starring such luminaries as Catherine Zeta-Jones, Harry Secombe and Anthony Hopkins.
These were interspersed with filmed excerpts from the Dylan Thomas Circle's own 1985 presentation of Under Milk Wood.
Several of the cast members of the 1985 presentation were introduced prior to the showing of the film.
Love's Labour's Lost Joins Bard on the Beach
VANCOUVER - Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival continues its 16th season with the witty romantic comedy Love's Labour's Lost. It plays in repertory with As You Like It Tuesdays through Sundays in the 520-seat open-ended mainstage tent in Vanier Park from June 15 through September 24.
Award-winning director Michael Shamata returns for his third Bard
season to stage this production, his favourite among Shakespeare's plays. In Love's Labour's Lost the King and his lords pledge to forsake female company in order to pursue noble studies.
When the Princess of France and her ladies arrive on official business, love smites the entire court and much hilarity results as the men resort to secret sonnets and comic
antics to pursue forbidden romance. Caught up in the confusion is Don Armado, a colourful Spanish braggart who falls for the country lass Jaquenetta.
Play tickets are 016 to 028.50. Order through the Bard box office, either on-site or by calling (604) 739-0559, or on-line at www.bard onthebeach. org.
The evening ended with Dylan's own reading of the closing words of Under Milk Wood and Poem on his Birthday, followed by part of a prayer sung by Welsh opera star Geraint Evans at Dylan's funeral.
The evening's success was largely due to the excellent technical production. Neville Thomas praised the editing and production skills of Paul Lievesley, who had spent many hours preparing a smooth and seamless montage of sound and video for the audience's entertainment.
Members of the audience also commended the professional quality of the presentation.
Dylan Thomas Circle members are now looking forward to the Circle's annual summer outing, which this year is planned for Point Roberts. Anyone interested in joining the Dylan Thomas Circle should contact Heather Davies at (604) 734-5500.
