U2 Makes a Triumphant Return to Their Hometown
DUBLIN - The city came to a standstill on June 25 as 82,000 ecstatic fans from across Ireland and around the world converged on Croke Park for the first of three concerts as part of the Vertigo World Tour. It was a homecoming to remember as US played their native city for the first time in four years.
Some loyal followers queued for two days outside the GAA stadium to be first to enter and see Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen - long regarded as the biggest band in the world - on home soil.
An estimated 30,000 travelled down from the North, and trains into the city were mobbed, as were the extra buses put on by Bus Eireann. The three concerts are estimated to be worth EU50 million to the capital. "It's not as big as a Papal visit, but it's the next biggest thing," said Dublin Tourism spokesman Frank McGee.
All week long, the excitement mounted as shops and pubs across Dublin blared out U2 hits, and the media issued daily progress reports on the transformation of Croke Park. A massive stage was erected on Hill 16, and special plastic covering was brought in to protect the turf.
Despite a downpour, spirits were not dampened as Bono and company took to the stage at 8:45 PM. They opened with Vertigo from their most recent album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, immediately captivating the audience. It was smooth sailing after that.
The concert was a mixture of classic hits from the past 25 years and
numbers from their more recent albums.
During the final number, One from the Achtung Baby album, fans were asked to dial a special number on their mobile phones and then to hold the illuminated screens of the phones aloft in support of the Make Poverty History campaign.
The band opened the European leg of its Vertigo tour in Belgium, and after the three concerts in Croke Park, they were headed for Cardiff, Wales.
The whole operation consists of three crews - a total of almost 200 workers - which take turns preparing the venues. While the band was playing in Dublin, another crew was preparing the set in Cardiff.
As soon as the Dublin concerts were over, work commenced on dismantling the stage set-up for transportation to Katowice, Poland for a July 5 concert.
The tour opened in San Diego, California, in March and will close in Portland, Oregon, in December and according to The Irish Times, more than 1.9 million tickets have been sold for around 90 concerts and the tour is expected to yield a profit of EU175 million.
