Irish Radio Asks: 'Who is Ireland's Greatest Woman'
DUBLIN - The result of a poll asking listeners of RTE Radio l's Marian Finucane Show who was Ireland's Greatest Woman was announced on the final broadcast of the show on June 24.
The personalities were among 10 women nominated by listeners as being the most influential in Irish history.
"We are all aware that the history of Ireland is a very male history," said RTE producer Donal O'Herlihy who came up with the concept for the competition. "The intention of the competition was to write women back into Irish history."
The name that rose to the top of list was Presentation Sisters founder, Nano Nagle, who died in 1784 after risking jail and death to establish
Catholic girls' education in Eighteenth Century Ireland.
A native of Ballygriffin, County Cork, she was educated in a hedge school due to the Penal Laws and later traded a life of privilege in Paris to work with Ireland's poor.
Nagle opened her first school in a mud cabin in Cove Lane, Cork, in 1752. She expanded to seven schools within 20 years and founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Presentation, which later became the template for Catholic girls' education in Ireland.
Nagle narrowly beat former President Mary Robinson in being voted Ireland's Greatest Woman. Robinson served as President from 1990 to 1996 and afterwards as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Disgraced Olympic swimmer Michelle Smith de Bruin came a close third. Smith de Bruin was banned from international swimming after being found guilty of tampering with a urine sample.
On Smith de Bruin coming in ahead of St. Brigid and other notable women such as Sixteenth Century pirate queen Grace O'Malley and
children's poverty campaigner Christina Noble, O'Herlihy said the result was a bit surprising.
But he said the Rathcoole, County Dublin native obviously has many supporters. The swimmer, nominated by husband and former trainer Erik de Bruin, has always denied using a banned substance in order to win her Olympic medals in 1996.
Marian Finucane, meanwhile, bade an emotional farewell to her listeners as she wrapped up the show she has presented for six years in a live broadcast from Galway, where she was conferred with an honorary Doctorate of Laws from NUI Galway.
She thanked her loyal listeners, who sent good luck wishes all week, including Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and President Mary McAleese. Her daily 9 AM to 10 AM time slot attracted 357,000 weekday listeners last year.
Finucane will return to the airwaves in September to present an as of yet unnamed weekend magazine show on Saturdays and Sundays after taking the summer off to spend time with husband John Clarke.
