LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
Giving our Community a Voice for the Past 15 Years
Dear Readers:
Since 1991 when Catholine and I launched the first issue of The Celtic Connection, we have been the voice of the Celts in Western Canada and throughout the U.S. Pacific Northwest.
While the early days were extremely tenuous, we persevered through some very rough patches and so it gives us tremendous pleasure to look back and recognize that not only have we survived, The Celtic Connection has flourished.
I would like to thank all those readers, advertisers, contributors and volunteers who have shared the journey of The Celtic Connection with us.
In particular, the late Jack Wallace was a tremendous inspiration, and
By
MAURA McCAY
it is largely due to his guidance and patience that we made it through some very turbulent years.
So many of you stood beside us through highs and lows and assisted in innumerable ways to ensure that we continued to publish. We're grateful for all your support and assistance.
While there are still challenges, we know the territory after all these years and it has become much easier for us to manage the storms.
So much has happened in these past 15 years and so many of our readers have marked milestones on these pages. There have been the joys of marriage and birth and the grief and sorrow of so many of our loves ones passing.
Young people who were only just born when the paper was first published in 1991, have grown up with The Celtic Connection.
It is my sincere hope that Catholine and I will continue to serve our communities for many years to come.
Please turn to page 15 for our special 15th anniversary souvenir issue. If you look closely at the photo compilation on the front and back cover of this issue, you just might see a face or two you recognize.
Sincerely,
Place Your Bids Now
This year is our 15*11 anniversary at The Celtic Connection and our golf tournament along with a silent auction will be the main event to mark this milestone. This event is also an important fundraiser for the newspaper and we need the support of the community to help make it a success.
Two valuable items have been generously donated to The Celtic Connection for our silent auction which will be held at our golf tournament at Green Acres Golf course in Richmond on September 33.
We invite any of our readers who would like to place advance bids on these valuable items prior to the auction, to call (604) 434-3747.

THEOREN FLEURY'S JERSEY
Belfast Giants superstar Theoren Fleury has donated his signed number 14 Belfast Giants jersey. Theo's jersey is now a collector's item and is valued at £900 (Cdn$1,850) in Northern Ireland.
Fleury was awarded the 2006 Kingdom of the Giants Most Valuable Player and also the Elite League Player of the year by the British Ice Hockey Writers Association. We would like to thank Belfast Giants owner Jim Yaworski of Calgary for his generous assistance with this donation.
QUEEN VICTORIA'S VISIT TO ROSS-SHIRE, SCOTLAND
This artwork is unique in that it is done entirely in tweed fabric (it is not a collage). It was created in Scotland in 1989, and valued at £450 (Cdn$900) at that time. One interesting feature is that the individual sitting beside the driver of the carriage is none other than John Brown.
He is reputed to have had a great influence on Victoria after the death of her husband Albert, in fact, it has been suggested that he was her lover. The film Mrs. Brown starring Judi Dench and Billy Connolly was about Queen Victoria's relationship with John Brown. We would like to thank artist Frank Talbot of Calgary for his generous donation.
