Ireland Monument Committee Presents Plan to Irish Ambassador
VANCOUVER - A plan to establish a monument in Vancouver marking the contribution of the Irish to Canada was presented to Ireland's Ambassador to Canada, His Excellency Declan Kelly, at an informal meeting at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on October 20.
At the meeting, which included former Expo '86 Commissioner General Patrick Reid and renowned neuroscientist and Alzheimer's researcher Dr. Patrick McGeer, the Ambassador was shown design drawings by internationally acclaimed Nova Scotia artist David Preston Smith and examples of the work of local designer Dan Bellan.
"From the discovery of insulin to the development of hockey, from world-famous entertainers and athletes, to several prime ministers, and in countless other ways, the Irish have made a huge contribution over more than two centuries to the Canada we know today", said project manager Brendan Flynn.
Fach side of the black granite monument, surmounted by a bronze replica of the Brian Boru harp, will display, respectively, the names of 100 Canadians of Irish birth or descent who have made outstanding contributions to Canada from the early 1800s to the present; a bas-relief depicting the Irish game of hurling, a forerunner of ice hockey; another representing the Irish contribution to the performing arts; and the map of Ireland, outlining each of its 32 counties.
The Ireland Monument Committee hopes to have the monument located in Stanley Park, near the existing marker commemorating the victims and families of the 1985 Air India tragedy off the coast of Ireland.
The families of the Air India victims have long expressed their gratitude to the people of the Irish village Dunmanus Bay, Ahakista, County Cork for their assistance and compassion both immediately after the event and in the years since. Discussions with the Vancouver Parks Board for a suitable site are underway.
"The monument is to be a statement and commemoration for all that the Irish have contributed to Canada as a nation over several centuries and deserves a site where it may be seen by not just Vancouverites, but by the hundreds of thousands of other Canadians and international visitors who come to the city each year," said Flynn. "It is a statement to all Canadians and the world."
The project has the support of many individuals and organizations in the city and in Ireland. It is hoped to have the monument in place in time for the 2010 Olympics. Those wishing more information are invited to visit: www.irelandmonument Vancouver, com.

Ireland's Entry to EU Film Fest at Pacific Cinematheque
Paula Molloy - who has recently replaced David Keating as Second Secretary at the Irish Embassy in Ottawa - has advised that Ireland's entry to this year's EU Film Festival, The Front Line, will be screened at the Pacific Cinematheque in Vancouver at 9:25pm on November 29.
The Pacific Cinematheque is located at 1131 Howe Street in Vancouver. The Front Line will be screened as part of the 11th annual European Union Film Festival. For tickets and more details, visit: www.cinematheque.bc.caorwww.eufilmfestival.com.
The Front Line is written and directed by David Gleeson. In this hardhitting emotional thriller, the outwardly unassuming Joe Yumba (Priq Pbouaney - Kingdom of Heaven) fights for his life and the lives of those close to him when he is forced to take part in a hazardous bank heist under the command of ruthless gangster Pddie Gilroy (James Frain - The Tudors).
Tearing through the streets of Dublin in a desperate attempt to escape ferocious felons, relentless detectives and raging gunshots, he will stop at nothing to save a child and guard his true identity.
