Eilis Courtney: This Year's Irish Woman of the Year
By CATHOLINE BUTLER On April 19, the Irish Women's Network (IWN) held their anniversary luncheon and Irish Woman of the Year Award at the Charthouse Restaurant in the historic fishing village of Steveston.
It seems fitting that 10 years after the first anniversary luncheon held on April 23, 1999, that the IWN would return once again to the Charthouse. At that time, the first Honourary Irish Woman of the "fear award was presented by Deirdre O'Ruairc and Sherie McAteer to the woman who founded the IWN -Mary Hatch.
At this year's event there was a great gathering of women - some of whom were present at the very first luncheon. As usual, it is always very relaxing and enjoyable to see old friends and meet new ones at the IWN.
That was the very reason that the IWN was formed in the first place, in order to bring Irish women together in a social setting so that they could network and make new friends. And, I must say, that has been accomplished judging from the high level of energy and talk that takes place wherever the group gathers.
Before the luncheon began, IWN president Deirdre O'Ruairc tinkled the water glass for a bit oiciunas in order to make the presentation award to the 2009 Irish Woman of the Year.
Everyone waited with baited breath as Deirdre announced, Eilis Courtney as the winner - and a very deserving winner indeed.
Eilis has certainly contributed to the
IRISHWOMEN'S NETWORK
Irish community and to the community at large. Among her many accomplishments, she has volunteered in Uganda with the Ads Support Organization.
Eilis has been a member of the Irish Women's Network almost since it started and Treasurer since 2004.
She has been involved with the UBC United Way campaign for over 17 years, managing the Campaign since 2003. Last fall Eilis and the UBC Team raised over 0500,000 for the Lower Mainland community.
She has also participated for a number of years in serving Christmas dinner to overseas students at UBC International House.
In 2007, Eilis took a leave of absence from her job at UBC to
spend three months in Uganda volunteering with The Ads Support Organization (TASO).
Thanks to Deirdre O'Ruairc and the other volunteer members of the IWN who organize the venues and events for all of us to enjoy ourselves while meeting other Irish women.
The next IWN activity will be at the annual European Festival on May 30 at the Scandinavian Community Centre located at 6540 Thomas Street in Burnaby.
The IWN will host a booth at the festival along with over 30 other countries. The festival is a day for the whole family to enjoy with ethnic food from the various European countries and traditional dress, along with song and dance. Last year over 6,000 people attended the event.
See the front cover of this issue of The Celtic Connection to win free tickets to the European Festival.

Irish Graduates Association Dinner
VANCOUVER - The Irish Graduates Association dinner will be held on June 6 at the Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club located at Kullahun Drive in Vancouver.
This year's guest speakers are Paul Gleeson and Tori Holmes - two non-rowers who took on one of the great challenges: The Atlantic Ocean.
Holmes, a slight 21-year-old from Alberta and Gleeson, a 29-year-old from Limerick, met in Australia. Acting on self-belief, they embraced the dream of rowing a tiny boat in the trans-Atlantic race. First they had to learn to row!
They were thrown around by huge seas, saw whales and sharks up close and suffered days of thirst when the watermaker broke down. But they persisted, with stubbornness, humor and a little help from a mysterious shadow.

12th ANNUAL EUROPEAN FESTIVAL
VANCOUVER - The Irish Women's Network will be supporting the Irish presence at the 12th annual European Festival held at the Scandinavian Community Centre in Burnaby.
The Festival is a 15-hour tour of Europe without the hassle of travel, the cost of airfares, or concern about pandemics!
Head down to the European Festival on May 30 and sample culinary delights from across Europe and explore the many cultures on display. Visitors will also be entertained by a myriad of folk dancers, singers and musicians.
Stop by the Irish table and see if you can pinpoint where your ancestors came from on the map of Ireland! Hostess Claire Fox is looking for volunteers and would welcome your help to help ensure that people dropping by the 'Island of Ireland' receive a warm Irish welcome. For more information, call her at (604) 236-7651.
