September will be just as hot as summer - at least musically at The Rogue
By STEVE EDGE
VANCOUVER - At the end of September, two of the most accomplished Celtic music acts in the world revisit Vancouver.
On September 26 The Rogue presents English guitarist/singer Martin Simpson at St. James Hall, and on September 30. Ireland's Lunasa bring a new CD to the opening concert of the Cap Folk & Roots Series at Capilano Performing Arts Theatre in North Vancouver.
It's a fabulous finale to a very eclectic month of roots music at The Rogue and elsewhere.
Martin Simpson is widely acknowledged as one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world.
He has been nominated an astounding 23 times in the 11 years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards - more than any other performer - with nine consecutive years as nominee for Musician of The Year, which he has won twice.
Martin excels in traditional English, Irish and Scottish ballads and tunes on the guitar, and is equally at home in the blues and banjo tunes of the deep south.
Born and raised in Lincolnshire, he first came to prominence as June Tabor's chosen guitarist, recording several albums with her before moving to New York State and later to California, and then New Orleans, recording and performing with a variety of groups including blues legend Henry Thomas, but mostly recording sttmning solo CDs.
A few years ago, he married Roy Bailey's daughter, Kit, they and their lovely daughter Molly now make their home in Sheffield. Fittingly, Martin has returned to his English musical roots making fabulous CDs True Stories, Prodigal Son, and Kind Letters.
This concert takes place at St. James Hall, 3214 West 10th Avenue, on September 26 at 8 PM, and is a must for any fans of guitar music and the power of traditional song.
Lunasa is without doubt Ireland's number one instrumental ensemble. Led by multi-instrumentalists Kevin Crawford (flute, whistle, bodhran), Sean Smyth (fiddle, whistle), and Cillian Vallely (uillean pipes, whistle), and anchored by the spritely guitar of Paul Meehan and the bass of Trevor Hutchinson, the band slides mellifluously from one tune to the next with startling precision and exhilarating style and panache.
They have just released a new CD, fittingly titled La Nua, on their own label. It is available from their website www.lunasa.ie, and of course at the concert on September 30 at CPAT, 2055 Purcell Way in North Vancouver. Tickets are available at (604) 990-7810.
The Rogue starts its fall season with two Canadian slide guitar divas - Ellen Mcilwaine (who has been playing world music and blues since she first j ammed with Jimi Hendrix and company

in the late 1960s) and Smithers B.C. native Rachelle van Zanten, who left alt rock group Painting Daisies a few years ago to launch her solo career with the excellent CDs Back To Francois and Where Your Garden Grows.
Rachelle will bring her new band, and both guitarists will perform solo and jam together with the band as well. The show is at St. James Hall on September 9.
The following Wednesday, American fiddler, banjoist, guitarist and singer Bruce Molsky plays St. James Hall. He is a master of southern fiddle and banjo styles, Appalachian songs, blues, and even Balkan, African and Scandinavian music.
Also a member of the Irish/Balkan supergroup Mozaik, Bruce is the consummate entertainer, and he is holding a couple of workshops at Prussin Music that week as well. Details on www.prussinmusic.com.
Ontario singer Reid Jamieson moved to Vancouver last year and has since released two excellent CDs The Presley Sessions (several of Elvis' lesser-known songs, recorded for his fiancee) and the brand new Staring Contest, which will be launched at this concert at St. James Hall on September
18.
The following morning, local gospel trio The Sojourners and a stellar supporting cast including Jim Byrnes, Steve Dawson, Candus Churchill, Dee Daniels and more, will set sail at 11 AM aboard The Queen Of Diamonds for a four-hour Gospel Cruise.
Your ticket includes brunch and a scenic tour around English Bay. Tickets are available on The Rogue website www. roguefolk. com.
On September 25 The Rogue presents a Cajun Honky Tonk Dance at St. James with Portland's Caleb Klauder (Foghorn Stringband) and his Country Band, plus special guests Joel Savoy (fiddle, vocals), and Jesse Lege (Cajun accordion, vocals) from Lafayette, Louisiana.
This will be an amazing evening, and is the third dance this month on the newly-finished dance floor at the St. James Hall.
It's been a hot summer, and September will be just as hot - at least musically! For more details on the best of it, visit www.roguefolk.com and tune in to The Edge On Folk, every Saturday from 8 AM to Noon on CiTR fm 101.9 and www.citr.ca.
