Third Term for Welsh Society President John Morris
By EIFION WILLIAMS
VANCOUVER - John Morris has been re-elected for a third term as president of the Vancouver Welsh Society.
Also re-elected were Lynn Owens-Whalen as vice-president, Gaynor Evans as treasurer, Elizabeth Williams-Wallace as corresponding secretary and Mark Jones as membership secretary. Jane Byrne stays on the executive as past president.
Others elected to the executive are Katrina Borsato, Heather Davies, Gethin Owen, Alcwyn Rogers and Anton Minard, who will also serve as recording secretary.
In addition to running the day-to-day business and activities of the Society, president John Morris takes a hands-on approach to maintaining the Cambrian Hall in good condition.
The 80-year old hall requires frequent and increasingly expensive repairs and renovations. The latest improvement has been the upgrading of the hall floor after years of constant use by various groups, including dance groups, resulting in heavy wear on the floor
Over the Christmas/New Year holiday period, John Morris, assisted by Ed Parker, spent over 60 hours upgrading the upper hall floor.
Others who have worked diligently at maintaining and repairing the hall are Lynn and Wilf Owens-Whalen, Gillian and Alcwyn Rogers and Pat Morris. The result has given the hall a fresh new look.
The annual St. David's Day Dinner will be held this year on February 26 at the Cambrian Hall, starting 6:30 PM, dinner at 7 PM. This event is always popular and tickets sell out quickly. Tickets cost $40 and can be obtained from Gaynor Evans by accessing the Society's website at www.welshsociety.com.
March 1, the day on which St. David's Day actually falls, there will be an open house and celebration in the Lower Hall, with entertainment and serving of the traditional cowl cennin (leek soup).
Another popular event at the Cambrian Hall, the Vancouver Orpheus's Pig 'n' Whistle night, will be held this year on

In Honour of Dewi Patron Saint of Wales
On St. David's Day, it is customary for the Welsh to wear a leek or a daffodil, two of Wales' three recognizable national symbols. The third is the Red Dragon (Y Ddraig Goch)
St. David the patron saint of Wales, lived in Wales in the Sixth Century. Tradition has it that he founded a monastery on the site of the present cathedral church at St. David's.
St. David died on March 1 in an unknown year. The date is still celebrated as his feast day.
The Celtic Connection would like to wish all our Welsh readers a happy St David's Day. Dydd Gwyl Dewi.
