Poverty is 'tearing British families apart' says charity
MANCHESTER - A charity traditionally focused on helping young people in the developing world is now aiming to raise £500,000 to help the UK's poorest children.
For the first time in its 93-year history, the Save The Children charity is asking the British public to help poor children at home.
In what some will see as a deliberate political intervention, the charity says Britain's youngsters have borne the brunt of the government's spending cuts.
Chief executive Justin Forsyth, who worked for both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown during their time in power, said, "No child should see their parent going hungry or start the new term without a warm coat and with holes in their shoes.
"Poverty is tearing families apart, with parents buckling under the pressure of mounting bills and children seeing their parents argue more about money.
"That's why for the first time in our history we are launching a UK appeal."
BOARDED UP houses in Toxteth, Liverpool, one of the most deprived areas of the UK. A leading children's charity has said that poverty is tearing many of Britain's families apart.
In a new report, It Shouldn't Happen Here, the charity, which works in 120 countries, gives the results of a survey of 1,504 children and more than 5,000 parents.
One in eight children in poverty in the UK go without at least one hot meal a day, and one in 10 poverty-stricken parents have cut back on food for
themselves to make sure their children have enough to eat, the report says.
One in seven children in poverty said they had to go without a warm winter coat and new shoes when they needed them, while one in four parents in poverty said they snapped at their children more often.
