Ads Hinder Integrotion

We have been a keen observer of the Integration battle in the US led by the Negro.
As a minority group, we Chinese Americans have similar problems, though they be of lesser degree.
An interesting aspect of this issue was recently brought out by Mayor Wagner's Committee on Job Advancement which has set up the goal of "integrating the minority groups into the advertising image of Americans at work, at play and as consumers."
The Committee points out that a stranger who formed opinions about the U.S. on the basis of magazine and TV advertising alone would come to the conclusion that Americans come only in one color: white.
In Harlem, we have seen cigarette ads with Negro models and we have come across beer signs with Puerto Rican personalities endorsing brand-beer but those angled toward segments. A summary of the 1962 issues of four mass-circulation magazines showed only two appearances of Negroes in major advertisements.
