Mr. Nat W. Jacobs, of Mon.treal, was the guest of the Herzl Zion Club on Sunday evening last, when he delivered an instructive arid interesting lecture on"Shylock. the Jew/'
Mr. Jacobs said that universal Jewry is still suffering from the false depiction by the immortal dramatist. Employing this sentiment as his basis, Mr. Jacobs proceeded to point out the errors of Shakespeare in his master .dramatic creation, "The Merchant of Venice."
"Notwithstanding the fact that Shakespeare holds an unrivalled place in the realm of literature and thought. yet this genius committed grave injustice in his portrayal of the Jew hs a bloodthirsty individual a usurer, anxious for his pound of flesh," said the speaker. "The picture, of Shylock has no warrant in reality and no sanction in Jewish law."
To introduce the lecture subject. a prologue was staged, consisting of an imaginary interview between Shylock and Shakespeare conceived by the speaker himself. Participating in this '-presentation were Messrs. _C"hark?

 - - --~ . %
Kntertainment of. a high calibre was offered by the Menorah Society at their niusicale last Monday night. A feature of the evening was an interesting talk by Rabbi Julius Siegel on. "Thr Spirit of Jewish . Folk-Songs." The *|)eaker obi-crved that the folksongs of a people are the product of their home life, and that Jewish folksongs were the reflection of Jewish life in Kurope for the past five hundred years. The Yeshivah was one of the more prominent influences that-moulded the character of the Jewish folk-song. He mentioned that there was a gr&al. wealth of Jewish folk-songs still popular in Europe to-day and that small effort had been made to preserve these for future generations. The performing artists were Miss Ruth Rottenberg, Mi* Bettie Smith. Miss . OarfiakJe. and Mr. Mannie Roth. The accompan-ifit wa- Mv Adeline Mnler. The haft was secured through the courtesy of the Council of Jewish Women. Mr. J. M. Stochen prwkfcd.
