A marriage, of to Los Angeles on :^hursday May ISth^ when Mjss Faniiie Frierman of LoS Angeles was wedded to Mr. Harry G. Cowan, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Cowan of Vancouver. The young couple will motor to Vancouver on their wedding trip, to be the guests of Mr. and Mrs. G. Cowan, 19th Aveniife West of this city. • ■ .^■.-.l
Mrs. Nace Swartz and son Dick, are now at their summer cottage at Bowen Island.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Walker of Sydney, Australia, accompanied by their 'daughter. Miss Doris Walker, were visitors in town last week, guests at the -Hotel Vancouver; They are on an aroun^-the-world tour. Several smart affairs were given in their honor. -
; Mrs. S. G. Spring of Seattle, accompanied by her daughter, Hannah-Beth, visited here over the week-end.
Miss Nellie Herbert entertained recently, in honor of Miss PauHne Nitz, prior to her departure for the East.
A delightful farewell party was given in honor of Mr. and Mrs. M. Kornbloom, on Saturday last, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. S. Shine, when their friends entertained prior to their departure for the East. The forty guests assembled presented Mr. and ■ Mrs. Kornbloom with a beautiful silver tea service.
Miss Ruth Koenigsberg entertained informally at a dancing party at her home on Nanton Avenue recently.
In honor of Miss Pauline Nitz, who ' will leave shortly with her brother-iii-law, and sister, Mr. and Mrs. M. • Kornbloom, for New York, Miss Esther Nemetz entertained on Saturday evening, with a very enjoyable party.
Council Elects Officers
Mrs. H. B. Kahn was elected Presi-' dent of the Vancouver Section Council of Jewish Women, at the closing meeting held on Wednesday afternoon. May 14th, in the Board Room of the Community Centre.
Mrs. Kahn- attended the Los Angeles Convention last winter as the delegate from Vancouver, and made a very favorable impression, and was appointed to several committees doing important work in Council affairs. She is a graduate of the University of Washington.
Mrs. Kahn has been active in the work of the Settlement House a few years ago and has earned for herself a wide circle of friends in all parts of the community.
Her executive ability, and popularity will assure the success of the Vancouver Section Council of Jewish Women during her term of office.,
Other officers elected were:
Vice-President, _ Mrs. I. W. Chess; Second Vice.-President, Mrs. S. Petersky; Third Vice.-President, Mrs. Wm. Sugarman. Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. J. J. Lechtzier. Recording Secretary, Mrs. H. Ablowitz. Mrs. S. Chess.
On the new Board of Directors are: Mrs. W. Genser, Mrs. M. Plant, Mrs. H. Rosenbaum, Mrs. I. Stein, Mrs. S. Harris, and Mrs. E. Healman.
All new officers will be formally installed at the Annual Closing Dinner, which is being held at the Hotel Vancouver, on May 31st, and chairman of the various departments will be chosen at the opening meeting in the Fall.
Mrs. M. Koenigsberg presided at the 'meeting and many excellent reports were given by the heads of the various departments.
Mrs. I; M. Gold gave a review of the work of the Religious Classes, mentioning that the final examinations were to be held and prizes for proficiency and honor rolls would be distributed early in June. The Council of Jewish Juniors, she said, were presenting the honor rolls and would supply. ■ treats for the children on the occasion.
Mrs. H. Ablowitz read the treasurer's report, which showed a very favorable bank .balance.
Mrs. S. Petersky reported on her activities during the month in the field of civics.
Mrs. N. Swartz spoke on the progress made by the Junior Council.
Mrs. Wm. Fisher, in giving the social welfare report mentioned especially the splendid work being
done in connection with the Crippled Children's Home.
Mrs. I. W. Chess, Chairman of membership, gave a very gratifying list of new members.
Mrs. S. Harris, who visits the Home for Incurables, every month, spoke on her work.
Mrs. H. B. Kahn explained what the educational section had been doing, mentioning especially the dramatic group which was preparing a playlet to be presented at the Annual Dinner.
The Well-Baby Clinic was also announced.
~ Two resolutions were brought in by the. out-going executive, and were read by Mrs, W. Genser, these being: 1. That in regard to executive meetings which in the past had been held just before the regular meetings —sometimes delaying these-—it was recommended that these be held on another date and in conjunction with the meeting of the educational group.
' 2. That the executive strongly Tecommend the teaching, of conversational Hebrew in the Religious Classes ^for a short period each Sunday—beginning next fall.
Both of these resolutions were endorsed by the body.
Following the business. hour, the Council was addressed by Mr. W. E. Grant, of the King Edward High School, who gave a short but potent talk on "Peace." "
The world's peace propaganda began 2600 years ago, he said, with the words of the prophet Isaiah.
Before closing the meeting, Mrs. Koenigsberg spoke a few words thanking the members for the support given her during her term of office, and tea was then served by Mrs. E. James and an informal hour enjoyed.
Talmud Torah Graduation Class
The Talmud Torah is now preparing .for Graduation Exercises, to take place in the Fall.
The Board of Education take this opportunity of. advising those pupils who have left Grade VI of the Talmud Torah, and who wish to receive their Graduation Certificates that they may do so by attending the Special Course in Talmud and Hebrew Literature.
