^A SUCCESSFUL TALMUD TORAH—
By G. FLORENCE
Elsewhere in this issue is a report of a meeting held on Monday evening, June 6th, for the purpose of hearing reports of the Vancouver Talmud Torah and for the election of officers of that institution.
It was the second disappointment that those interested in this most important aspect,of Jewish life, have suffered in the course of a month.
About a month ago a circular was mailed to every Jewish home in Vancouver, advising that a meeting was to be held at which time reports explanatory of the financial position and educational standards of the Talmud Torah would be given, and that an election would be held to select officers to carry on the work of the institution.
Had it not been for the fact that a Zionist executive meeting -was being- held that evening, there would not have been present a sufficient number to count out the fingers of one's hands.
At that meeting Mr. Abe Rothstein, the President of the Talmud Torah, explained that the "election" was being held previous • to the end of the term, as it was felt that this arrangement would be more satisfactory to the incoming officers, who would thus have an opportunity to get to know the institution, and make such changes, if any, that they might deem advisable in staff, standards, curriculum, fees, and the many other matters that have to be considered. He felt it would be an advantage to all concerned that these matters be considered long before the commencement of the new term.
Mr. Rothstein also refused to stand for re-election, and stated that even though no successor would come forward he would not carry on after that date as president. In stating this decision Mr. Rothstein made it abundantly clear that it was his intention to force someone else to assume the task of managing this institution.
One must admire his stand. He with his long experience realizes only too well, that members of a community are prone to leave to the willing worker the affairs of the community, so long as all is going- well.
Mr. Rothstein has learned as more of us must learn, that the time to make changes is when everything is in orderly condition, not waiting for crises to force emergency measures to be taken. Notwithstanding ability there is yet a limit to the ingenuity and originality of an individual, and progress is apt to be more continuous if the responsibility for management is put on a revolving "basis. Specialization may be efficient for a permanent staff, but it is not salutary for publicly chosen committees.
The Vancouver Talmud Torah is in a most enviable position financially, thanks to the support of the Vancouver Jewish Administrative Council, and to the untiring efforts of its president for the past three years, Mr. Abe Rothstein.
The reports tell that over one hundred pupils attend classes regularly; that the children are happy in the splendid class-rooms which were this year provided by the Administrative Council enabling- all pupils to be taught under one roof; that two busses are regularly used to bring the children to classes and to take them home; that the educational standards are of the highest.
Vancouver Jews have reason to be proud of their educational facilities, which are not surpassed by any cities of like size on the West Coast.
No one could be found to accept the office of president at the first meeting^. Rev. N. M. Pastinsky was urged by those present to convene a committee to endeavor to induce someone to accept the position. It was without avail.
The committee decided to call a meeting at the conclusion of ShevTioth, and there convened about thirty persons at the Community Centre on Monday evening, June 6th. The reports were presented, but no election was held. It was felt that perhaps not sufficient publicity had been given to the meeting, so it was decided to make a third attempt on Sunday, June 12th, at 8.30 p.m. in the Community Centre.
The paradoxical situation is, that here is a vitally necessary communal institution, in sound financial position, with fine teaching staff, with pupils, busses, quarters but no one willing- to take the job of managing it.
What can be the reason for such apathy? Never was there a time when it was more necessary to make Jewish children aware of their Jewishness.
We talk of building synagogues, and we say we want these new buildings for the children. We must also realize that the children must be taught to want the s3aiagogues.
It is not sufficient that parents commend the management on the good work that is being done, but they must also take a share in this work. Who if not the parents should make up the greater part of the board of management?
If parents and donors are unwilling or unable to take more interest, then it were time consideration be given to the appointment of a manager to act for them.
The suggestion has been mooted that the Administrative €ouncil, the largest donor to this work, and also representative of all Vancouver Jewry, be asked to assume the management. Such an idea has merit, but are we ready for it?
It is to be hoped that the present generation of parents will recall the feeling of responsibility which their own parents displayed towards this matter of instruction in Jewishness, and will rise to the occasion.
We have the need—we have the leadership—we have the facilities.
We NEED the LEADERSHIP to continue to use the FACILI-'TIES—"or else."
SLUR ON JEWS eETRAGTEDBY COL. CHARLES KERR
LONDON (WNS) — Challenged by the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council to substantiate or withdraw his allegation that plotters to overthrow the British Government were mostly of the Jewish race, Lt. Col. Charles Kerr, chief whip of the National Liberal Party in the House of Commons, retracted the slur which he had made at the annual meeting of the Scottish Liberal National Association in Glasgow. In a formal statement. Colonel Kerr saM: "I have been thinking very deeply about my speech last week in Glasgow eind have come to the conclusion that I had no right whatever in my remarks concerning the Communist and anti-God movements to refer to Jews. Doing so created a completely wrong impression and I now express sincere regret. I want to state emphatically that I am certain a vast majority of the Jewish people in this country is just as much against those activitities as any other true, loyal citizens, among whom representatives of the Jewish people are not the least distinguished, in many walks of life." Kerr's attack on the Jews had created a nationwide stir in view of the fact that War Minister Leslie Hore-Beli-sha, who is a Jew, is chairman of the National Liberals.

In Newark, N.J., there's a highly respected attorney of German ancestry by the name of Otto Stiefel, who's the New Jersey legal representative for Fritz Kuhn, fuehrer of the Grcr-man-American Bund. ... Prom a landsman of Stiefel we learn that his father, Edouard Stiefel, was a Jew who hailed from Rheinpfalz, but his mother was a Christian. . . Edouard came to America some 50 or 60 years ago and was an agent in New Jersey for Anhouser-Busch. ... A cousin, Dr. Benno Stiefel, is a prominent gynecologist in New York and is known as a Jew. . . Another cousin belongs to one of New Jersey's leading Reform temples. . . . Did you see page 22 in the June issue of Judge? . . . It's a striking prediction of an anti-Nazi revolution in Germany, to take place "soon." . . . Here's hoping The Judge is a good prophet too. . , . Which reminds us of a new anti-Hitler salute, introduced at one of the Theatre Arts Committee's politidal cabarets. . . . You raise your right arm as the Nazis do, and loudly exclaim: "Heel" . . .
DON'T FORGET
Whether or not you believe the report that Harry Walsh, Jersey City's chief of police, told Representative O'Connell that "Jews are making all the trouble in Jersey City," we happen to know that the son-in-law of one of Jersey City's leading Jews, and a Hague appointee, said that of all the Jersey City politicians Walsh is: the only one who could have made such a statement . . . People who ask why the Department of Justice hasn't made public its report on Nazi activities are told that it would cost too much, as the report fills 18 volumes.
. The fact is, though, that the report will be made public as soon as the Congressional probers get to work on.the Nazis. ... A good deal of the evidence linking Nazis to the international spy ring being probed by Uncle Sam came right out of that report. . . . The vote on the resolution authorizing the . FOREIGN NOTES
The papers missed a swell story when they overlooked the recent death in Lemberg of Leibush Wahl, a direct descendant of that Saul Wahl who, according to legend, was king of Poland for a night dm-ing the Middle Ages. . . . The recent blighting of the romance between Prince Michael Radziwill and a jpolish Jewess gives the Wahl legend even more timely interest, for Wahl became king through the influence of a Radziwill whom his father had befriended. . . . The grandchildren of Paul Ehrhch, the German Jew who won the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1908, are reported to be homeless and penniless. . . . The Chinese can be assured that at least four of the group of German military strategists who have been ordered home by the Reich authorities will not obey. . , They're non-Aryans. . . . European musical circles are chuckling at the great to-do the Nazis made over the 125th anniversary of Richard Wagner's birth. . . . For there's a deal of evidence that Ludwig Geyer, a converted Jew, was Wagner's papa, which would make the musical laureate of the Third Reich treif. . . . Every Jew in the town of Boskovitzs, Czechoslovakia, has taken an oath not to speak German as long as that language is being used to spread hatred of the Jew-; ish people. . . May 25th has been proclaimed an annual day of. mourning by the Jews of Hungary and will become part o^ the Jewish calendar. . . May 25th is the day the' Hungarian Senate passed the anti-Jewish num-erus clausus law.

ROME (WNS)—Italy is negotiating with the German government to obtain the services of several hundred German-Jewish agronomists, chemists and engineers to go to Ethiopia to help develop the country, it is reported in well-informed circles here. The Italian authorities are ready to offer the Jewish experts tlu-ee year contracts. • "

A well-informed Jewish authority in Wisconsin tells us that the controversy over the ousting of a Jewish student as editor of the Uili-versity of Wisconsin paper is not a clear-cut case of anti-Semitism , . . Radical vs. conservative and independent vs. fraternity are the real issues involved. .. Students who busted hte Jewish editor did make anti-Semitic cracks in private, but almost the very next day they recanted and insisted that those statements were made in the heat of controversy and did not represent their real opinion. . ABOUT PEOPLE
Most dramatic moment of the Jewish War Veterans' Day services in Temple Emanu-EI came when Chairman J. George Predman introduced a gentleman by the name of S. Osgood Andrews and revealed that he is the great grandson of Hayin Salomon. ... Of all the messages and letters of congratulations received by Henry Monsky, new B'nai B'rith prexy, the one he treasures most is a telegram in Yiddish from his aged mother. . . He was promised an office boy's job, but despite daily calls and visits he's still waiting. . . j One of Pittsburgh's biggest testimonial dinners is scheduled for June 14th, with Harry Schaffer, commander-in-chief, of the Jewish War Veterans, as guest of honor.

HAMBURG, Germany (WNS)—The famous banking firm of M-M. Warburg & Company passed out of Jewish hands when. all four surviving Jewish partners of the bank that was founded in 1797 resigned to enable the house to be.converted into a limited company, the stock of which is to be held by. banks and industrial corporations. The partners who resigned were Max dnd Fritz Warburg, brothers of the, late Felix and Paul Warburg,.Ernst Spieelberg and Erich M. Warburg. Control of the Warburg bank now passes into hands of Siemens & Halske, Siemens Schuckert and other Aryan controlled firms: The Warbiu-gs, however, retain control of the branch in Amsterdam, Holland.
