OBITUARIES
An outstanding cultural eve-ig to commemorate Jewish lusic Month was held at the Community. Centre last Sunday vening under the auspices of the dult Division, Cultural Com-ittee of the Centre. The committee in charge was especially pleased to have as guest participants the "Little Folk Singers" un der the musical direction of Kay Rankin and their conductor Donna McDonald. This choral group opened the program by showing the similarity in the folkways of all people through the love of music. They sang songs in the native languages of the people who make up Canada.
Marilyn Zack, well known pianist and winner of the B'nai B'rith Talent Award, showed 'her usiial technique and fine touch in her two selections.
Jewish Music Month would not be complete without theTraditional music of the synagogue. The Beth Israel Choir, under the direction of Margaret Fewster, presented cantorial, chassidic and Israeli folk songs as thieir contribution. The choir showed great precision and yet flexibility of tone.
Arthur Poison, violinist, and Harold Brown, pianist, a very fine twosome, brought classical music to the fore with several well chosen masterpieces. The Hora was especially well received and the fine technique shown by Mr. Brown in accompanying Mr, Poison in the early Mendelsohn composition drew very favorable applause.
Morris Moses, a young baritone; from whom we hope to hear more, displayed a natural flair for the liturgical. He also favored us with two arias from grand opera.
Claire Klein, who has won acclaim through her work on T.V., radio and concert stage, was back at the Centre once again with a group of Yiddish

folk songs. Her interpretation of fol songs captures, all the pathos anc humor that has woven itself into the cloak of Jewish tradition. Her voice and decor was especially pleasing. She was accompanied by Forbes Headrick on the guitar.
Another highlight of the program was the Vancouver Jewish Folk Singers, under the direction of Claire Klein, also making a return appear-;ance at the Centre. The folk singers again provided a heart-warming experience with their selection from the treasure-house of Jewish songs.
The evening concluded with a sing song led by Perry Friedman on the banjo. The participation he drew from the audience was worthy of his teacher, Pete Seeger.
The Committee 'in charge of arrangements and Ben Chud, who actec as Master of Ceremonies, deserves a special accolade for a well-rouhded-oat and" enjoyable evening.

With the lifting of the blockade Eilat has come into her own. The dream of a gateway to Asia and Africa has in two months became a bustling reajlity. Ships of many nations have already used the small jetty. Goods come from the Industria North of Israel by rail to Beersheba ^hd then by truck for one hundred and twenty miles. The plans for a deep sea port, shelved for five years, have been taken out again. But before work actually begins they will have to be redrafted to deal with far greater volume of traffic than was ever envisaged before Nasser cut Europe's life-line to the Middle East thus com.pelling shipping to find another route.
We left the Mivtach by launch and walked past a group of Dutch sailors standing on the wharf. Eilat to them was jjst another port of call and the gang that loaded their ship was just another group of dock-workers speaidng an alien tongue. But to us Eilat was a port of history, for it was from here that King Solomon exported his copper and'imported his wool and spice for the Temple. For us the ddckrworkers were kibbutz galuyot, the great ingathering of our people, and the language they now used was the tongue of the Prophets.

"The Egyptians kept the people of Gaza in bondage and servility," Mr. lo\)rGve declared, as he expressed support for Premier Ben Gurion's proposals that Gaza should become a demilitarized zone, under U.N. control with Israel providing the civil service and making provisioi;i for the participation of the people of Gaza in local government.
Mr. Bobrove called the Histadrut "the most vital force in Israel working for the integration of newcomers from backward lands. The results of Histadrut's efforts with newcomers showed in the Sinai campaign where many of them participated in the Israeli forces."
