Liberal candidate Pat McGeer seeks labor expansion
DR. PAT McGEER
"The basic labor problem in British Columbia is the failure of the government to provide jobs. They have failed to create the conditions required for maximum industrial growth," claims Pat McGeer, Liberal candidate in the DeceriAec 17 Vancouver, Roint^ Grey by-electi6n.
Cbmmenting on ttie current labor unrest, McGeer stated that "It is unfortunate that the only time the entire electorate becomes aware of labor-management relations is in times of trouble such as we are witnessing at present. Despite the fact

that a large part of this riding consists of people who are not concerned day-by-day with labor relations it will be a major issue in this campaign."
"The way to solve the present labor unrest is to not support or pass punitive legislation — which the government has done —nor to enforce it, but to find more jobs," McGeer said. "Teamwork, pulling together for the common good, is vitally needed in B.C.'s labor-management relations field if we are to have growth."
"The Liberal party is not interested in taking sides in labor-management disputes, but in getting to the real root of the problem and working towards proper long-term solutions. We know we have the answer," McGeer added, "and that it will require sacrifices on the part of everyone if we are to effectively overcome the problem."
McGeer, Who worked as an industrial chemist on new product development for an American chemical company before returning to study medicine at UBC, believes thati the formula which resulted in their spectacular growth from a small local industry to one of ;tlie world's giants in the chemical field can be applied in B.C. and it can be applied now.
Biteically, McGeer noted, th^ formula is of three parts, all of which are required for success: attract capital; develop skills; foster industrial superiority through advanced technology, resarch and the encouragement of technical initiative.
"The Liberal party is pledged to industrial development and sounder labor relations," McGeer stated. "We need growth-promoting projects, not vote-promoting projects. We only have to keep this present B.C. government as long as we will tolerate it. This is why I ask for support in this by-election," McGeer added, "so that we will be in a position to provide answers toward a more secure future. I am certain that if the voters give me their confidence, hey will not be disappointed."
