We came from the United States in the early years of the State, regarded as "meshuggah" by
friends and family for: abandoning kept up with our technological spread.
We do not sit back on our laurels and complacently celebrate our 30 years of Statehood for we know that much yet remains to be done.
'That's what I love about Israel," said a new immigrant, a well-known goldsmith from England who, today, has swtiched her field and is training to be a dental technician, noting that the processes and skills required for work in dental technology are similar to those used in jewellry-

were rationed, and almost unavailable, and newspaper, even in the most established households, was usjed in lieu of toilet paper. UNFORIOJNATELY. progress
on the days of "In Israel there are so many even dishtowels opportunities, so many areas in
which to make your contribution. There is still so much to be done."
THIRTY YEARS and we know that change has hot been uniform and that the fruits of our
in the social welfare field has not development have not been evenly
the comforts of America for what everyone thought would be a life of intolerable hardship. Instead, it has turned out to; be one exciting experience after another.
I still recall our first winter in a tiny, unheated apartment in
advances. The gap between the 'haves" and the "have-^ots" is still wide.
Yet, we are liot pessimistic aboiit the future nor about our ability to
effect change. We have a past timistic about the future, background of achievement on And so am I.
Yet, a nation which has managed to make such impressive strides in spite of the fact that it has been forced to wage four wars in its short span of existence is op-
Jerusalem. We were living in the which to draw. We see how small
last house in Katamon: there was . nothing beyond our house but lovely wild, rocky, unspoiled hills wMch we enthusiastically c^^^ every Sabbath. Today, those hills are covered with housing projects and the maginficent buildings of the Hebrew University arid the Israel Museum.
Progress, culturally ias well as economically, is typified by the myriads of twinkling lights which make Jerusalem, at twilight, a sight so breath-taking that I stilL find it difficult to grasp the speed at which the country has been built up.
I RIDE UP to Jerusalem, most of it on the new four-lane speedway. It takes 40 minutes to go from my suburban Tel Aviv home of today to Jerusalem. Thirty years ago, it took hours on a winding one-lane highway. I'm neither an engineer nor a construction worker but I take personal pride in our network of highways.
Our sense of community gives UiS' the satisfactions found in smalltown living for Israel is really one big small town where people are connected to each other in ways they aren't in a large city.
Yet, the country is far from restrictive or provincial. As a. friend who set up her own small publishing firm s^id: **There are professional challenges which you don't find in the typical small-town plus the opportunities to get involved in larger issues such as politics and art." Thirty years ago there weren't sufficient authors to justify her business venture. ,
MY HOUSE, a small' three-bedroom one-story unit;>4s set within a garden and surrounded by a hedge, higher than the, roof, which took just a few years to grow. You don't need a "green thumb" in Israel. The trees, shrubs and flowers blooni almost unattended at a speed which parallels our industrial and scientific advances. , , '
, When' we moVed here 22 years , ago, the area was dominated by abjandohed orange grovei^, and waste-land.' There was only, one \ grbcery store where flour, ride.^d. ' other basic foodstuffs were ladled out frbni lapgeVbarrels into.' wiiatevfeii icohtainer or, \ia^, the,\ hoti^ewife cotild scrounge.. Today,' w'(^:,have two major , shopping centres in the area and two modern superihairkets where frozen and convenience foods are taken lor granted. . ,
And milk^ onc^ delivered un^ pasturized and poured , ^rjon^, tJhe > vendor's jug > into, the' customer's vpaihj is now, sold in plastic bags., We're manufacturing!planes as well as life-saving medical equipment, exportmg tliamonds and furs,, perfecting our \ textile industry and gbing.more and more
workshops, manufacturing under relatively primitive conditions, have been replaced by large, modem plants. We marvel at the mechanization of our eommUnal settlements and note the* growth of
our Universities, with branches in oUt-lying regions. V
