Skeena Backs Howard Again
POLITICAL forecasters In Skeena riding were proven wrong by results of last month's federal election which saw New Democrat Frank Howard returned to Ottawa with a resounding victory over Liberal Art Bates.
It had been predicted here widely that the election would see a close race but with only a few isolated polls to be heard from, Howard had 12,045 votes to Bates' 7,512. Conservative candidate Vern Ciccone trailed with 3,425 votes despite a very active campaign.
The voters of this riding thus decisively rejected the general swing to the Liberals and the "Trudeau image" and instead, sent Howard back to Ottawa for his sixth consecutive term with 54 percent of the popular vote.
In Prince Rupert itself Howard polled some 2,600 votes to 1,750 for Bates and 860 for Ciccone.
Jubilation at New Democratic Party committee rooms over Howard's victory was dampened somewhat by results from the rest of the country and news of NDP leader T. C. (Tommy) Douglas' defeat in Burnaby-Seymour.

Prince Rupert was the scene of a civic reception on June 26 marking the inaugural run of Alaska's latest state ferry, the Wickersham. Among those on the platform to mark the occasion were Governor Walter Hickel of Alaska, William Murray, speaker of the B.C. Legislature; W. Boardman, speaker of the Alaska state house; H. Strand-berg, Alaska public works com missioner, and Mayor P. J. Lester of Prince Rupert.
Built in Norway last year for a Swedish owner, the sleek 5,000 ton vessel was intended originally for service between England and France. ,

THE SALMON SEASON IS
well underway and the floats are deserted most weekdays. Some trollers are reported doing quite well but early fishing did not live up to expectations among the seiners. But it's still very early in the season and, hopefully, forecasts of good runs may still be realized.
These forecasts, in fact, have brought a number of salmon fishermen back into the industry and with no herring fishery this summer quite a number of union members are still on the beach looking for work.
Most of them are registered at Fishermen's Hall and skippers are urged to contact the Union first when looking for experienced men.

MRS. NELLIE LEESON, UFAWU women's chief shop steward at Port Edward, was featured in the Prince Rupert Daily News as "personality of the week" recently. "Port Edward asks Nellie when something is needed" the headline on the story ran — and that in itself is as good a comment as any on this remarkable Union member.
She possesses "special organizational abilities and has used her talents for the good of her community," the story said, adding i
enougli to the few non-Native observers in attendance but chanting of the boats' names, a custom dating back many generations in Nishga tradition, was new to most.
After the naming, dozens of well wishers flocked aboard the boats for good luck toasts. Someone produced a guitar and a lively songfest got underway in which we were treated to some beautiful Nishga music.
One song about the beaver, in particular, would make the slick professionalism we're offered on television pale by comparison. When asked why they had never recorded the song, the lead singer replied it had been in his family for generations, passed on from parents to children. They wouldn't cheapen the song by commercializing it. he said. Jacob Nyse sang an interesting
that "basis for her ability is her i version about the coming of the
sensitivity to the problems and needs of others."

IN A RECENT BRIEF TO THE
city's special committee on land disposal, Prince Rupert Citizens' Housing Committee suggested land leases as the answer to high priced lots. Such leases would act as a brake on spiralling land costs, the labor sponsored Housing Committee said, and would make property available to average citizens wishing to build single unit private dwellings.
A new policy would allow the city to retain control over property for future use and would encourage cooperative and public housing starts by making land available at reasonable cost, the brief contended.

ceremonies are perhaps unique in that they combine the culture of the Nishga people with that of the white community.
An example of this was seen at recent naming ceremonies for the S.C. 164 and the Nishga People at Sunnyside floats. Smashing of the champagne bottles across the bows, of course, was familiar
white man and this song too, if commercialized, almost certainly would be destined for the best seller lists.
