I'LL GO
HAIFA ~ Self-exUed Czech writer Ladlslav Mn-. acko said he would retura to his homeland as soon as it resumed relations with Israel. He returned to Israel with his wife Hedyii^ aboard the nus. pah from a six-week holiday in Italy and France.i
M^.Mnacko told The Jer-uisalemi Post: "The resumption of relations with lisrael is vital, and when they are resumed — that Will be the day for my return home. I consider it a moral obligation to remain here until that day. The resumption of these relations is a must for iny country, and a test of the goodwill of the new men at the helm."
Mr. Mnacko, 49, and his wife left Czechoslovakia and came to Israel last August in prQtest against the extreme anti-Israel position the regime had taken. At the time, he was expelled from the Czech Communist Party and stripped of his Czech citizensldp, recently restored in the new regime's liberalization program.
He said he was "happy" about the restoration of his citizenship and ''very satisfied" over the report - since qualified — that his country intended to resume relations with Israel. Concerning his return to his homeland, be added:
"I do not wish to return home amid fanfares, but not as a prodigal scm, either."
Asked whether he had been surprised by the liberalization move inCzechoslovakia, Mr. Mnacko said: "The chimge is not sudden at all. For me it was clear that it must come, although when I predicted it when I first came here last August, I was considered a half-mad DonQui-xote. This is a fundamental change, a change of generations. The regime has been taken over by new men who are better prepared to lead our society than the old guard, whom they replaced.''
SOVIET INTERVENTION
Asked about reports of possible Soviet military intervention inCzechoslovakia, Mr. Mnacko said that he did not consider such a step either realistic or possible. "I don't think they want to, it would be unwise for them, and there are no reasons for it. The Czech Socialist Republic is not leaving the Socialist Bloc and it wants to retain its close relations with the Soviet Union. There - are no differences of orin-cU>le between us and the Soviet Union."
Asked whether the CSR might not have become toe liberal for the Soviet's lik-iijg, he said that "the Russians have on several oc-casicHis declared that they will not interfere in the internal a£birs of the other Socialist countries, and it is important that they honor thik The change in our country is the business of our pec^Ie (XQly, and we shall live as we choose. For me it is important that we do not abandon socialism, and there is indeed no danger that we will."
Mr. Mnacko said the case of Hungary in 1956 could not be coinpared with that of Czechoslovakia today. "The Soviet Ariny was stationed in Hungary, as it is not in the CSR, and then it was attacked — in fact, at the outset it was on the defensive."
LOVED STAY IN ISRAEL
Mr. Mnacko, whose wife constantly bad tor emind him not to forget his bags, said that he "loved my stay" in Israel. "I'm hot a nationalist and feel at home wherever I feel good, and I feel very good here. However, this is hot my homeland. I am a stranger and my roots are not here. But the questionof diplomatic relations is a moral one. The CSR has relations with such regimes as the military Junta in Greece^ and it is not Ipgr ical to break them off with . Israel. Even if we take the extreme position that Israel went to war in the service of imperialism — and I know you did not r-then the struggle should be jigainst the imperialist masters and not against the little country that allegedly, carried out their orders. That is contrary to aU logic" He added that it was important that relations must not only be resumed but also improved, and not left at the ''zero leviervof formality at which they had been before last Jane.."Bet-ter relations will profit both sides and they are a necessity,'^ he said.
He said that his new book, "The Aggressors", written during his stay here, has / Just been publldted in Vien- \ na, and would socm be published here, toe, "To my surprise, I ufeJtiiBt heard thi^t at le^ parts of it may also be ipubUshed in the GSR," hesald.Thebbokdes-crlbes the tension In Israel before the Six Day War. and e^ines the 'siinilarities' between that war and the Vietnam War.
