TORONTO —
Surprisingly, the stresses of Israeli life, its economic stringencies and the strain of an uneasy peace have nbt traumatized her people, nor have the pressures of war triggered an emotional earthquake.
At least, that is the opinion of Cainadian-train-ed psychologist Doy Friedlander, who for the past six years has directed the student counselling service of the Hebrew University.
"the morale of the country has just not changed." says the 42-year.old Israeli, "The picture of a demoralized nation suffering from trauma makes good newspaper reading, but it is just not true... In Israel there is a remarkable iadaptability." ■
He bases his viewpoint on more than armchair speculation. As chief over a staff of 14 full-time psychiatrists, social workers and psychologists,, as well as 18 ^tudents-in-training — who see some 1.000 students regularly every school year — Friedlander is familiar with the psyche of the college-age youth, the pulse of the country.
"The statistics are alarmingly reassuring." he says of his studies which disprove the accepted hypothesis that undue stress -adversely affects the mental health of a. nation^Jstaelis are resilient.
While experts antici-
pated an epidemic of .psychological problenis in the wake of the Torn Kippur War, only 60 cases at his clinic were a direct consequence the bereavement of widows aiRt girl friends and the psychological casualties of the war wounded.
A study of 300 male^~ students involved in extensive war combat, showed. sui:prisingly, that the rigors of battle did little to. alter their attitudes, perspective on the future and their psychological stability.
Contrary to the American experience in Viet Nam, the young Israeli soldiers, says Friedlander, proved to be con-formers, did not align themselves with radical politics, had remarkable coping powers and tended to increase long-range planning, rather than adopting the credo, of "live for today, tomorrow we die."
The clinic, run on the astounding shoestring budget of $30,(300. oper^ ates prograriis for Ruis-sian. South American and Arab Jewish immigrants, plans weekend seminars, to acquaint Sabras and foreign students and selects and trains 35 residential dons.
"The university must recognize our worth." he ,says with pride, "since we didn't sustain as great
a ciitback." — a modest 8% compared to the over^ all school cutback of 12%: His clinic now receives 40% of its spartan budget from research grants and government contracts, the top staff salary nearing $4,000.
' "They would just laugh at that here." he says smiling, taking note of the North American-size budget of York, at $'/i to V* million:
Dov Friedlander
The European-born, Israeli-bred psychologist, has spent the better part of his career analyzing and counselling students. Trained in England and Kingston's Queen's University, he served as a senior psychologist at the Jewish Vocational Service here, before moving to York University's counselling and development centre.
He; worked there for four years, until 1970. and now on sabbatical from his Israeli post, has returned to the York centre as a visiting consultant and guest lecturer. Two young childreii have joined him and his wife in a
Rally condemns stereolTpes
the "rat race" of running to various social functions, the" feeling that parents who; demanded their children marry within the faith often did not live- up to their own Jewish commitments, and the often banal small talk which surrounds single socializing.
The group, which hopes to hold a major rally in the next few. months, passed a number of resolutions.
Jerry Geriesove, cultural chairman of the Odd Single Qub, delivered opening remarks. Co-or-dinator of the new group is Rabbi Meir Gottesman.
TORGPfTO —
Stereotypes of single Jewish men and women as unattractive "moiri-ma's boys" or spoiled "Jewish princesses" were sharply condemned at a rally of 100 young singles here last week.
The rally, which was held at Beth Sholom Synagogue, was called to lay the groundwork for a new movement called Pride, self-described as Jewish singles against inter-marriage and assimilation.
During the meeting, many singles spoke about the hardships of meeting suitable Jewish partners.

rented house while his oldest daughter is living and working in the United States this year as sha-liach.
The Israeli student, he' says, describing a study he and his. colleagues undertook at the Hebrew University in 1974. "is right-wing, is concerned with his studies, is hardworking, is instrumentally oriented, that is taking subjects to further a career, is competitive and ver>' bright."
Why? The educational system, he explains, is modelled on a structured. European scheme with an almost built-in Jewish respect for academics. Students, entering university after military service, are older and more mature.
With the entire country mobilized for security duty, he claims opportunities were minimized for the "generation gap" to; appear. And. adds Friedlander. "revolt and dissent are more of a middle class luxury, a luxury we never had. nor could afford."
He dismisses the Arab protest movement at his university as the product of a small sub-group "seeking out issues on xampus to give expression to their nationalistic desires. "If anything, he" says, "there is some discrimination in their favor, sonie bending toward them," as far as admission cnteria are concerned, with pre-academic training programs preparing disadvantaged Arab and Sephardic students.
Friedlander's counselling clinic at Hebrew U — the first of its kind in the country —; offers an impressive array of services. Designed originally to meeit the needs of North American students;, more at ease in seeking psychological aid. the centre's staff now see 80% Israelis • and 20% overseas students — l/16th of the student population reach their doors.
