TORONTO -
The . Israel; uoniari. uhose nivlhifal image is that of a street-smart, tdugh-ialking equal to her male brethren, is far from the ideal that is the en\\ of her North .American sisters,
.A \ietiin of stifling archaic la\\s and centuries-old rabbinic attitudes that refuse to bend, the Israeli woman must also cope with a peculiar type-of male chauvinism that liberates her from the household but keeps her in subordinate jobs, according to Tsilia Ben-Dor. a, bright, articulate young woman with a keen sense of what lies behiad the real Israeli woman.
.A native of Israel, she is a student in educational psychology at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and had u ritten a thesis in Israel on se.v role stereotyping on television.
The first myth to contend with, she say s. is thai of the army, where women arc required to serve, "it suggests that women are fighters. People think all women serve in the army when in fact it's onlv about 25%. ••
.And what arc the kind of jobs made ■ available to women in the army?
"Most of it is clerical work," Ms. Ben-Dor admits with a measure of disgust. This is unfair, she points out, especially because Israeli women who enter the army are high school graduates and sometimes are better educated than some of the officers.
"The .qiiality of woman-power ismuch higher than manpow er,"' ■ she , says, ■ "We're much more quali,-fied to become officers."
The ne.\t myth is that of the kibbutz woman slugging it out in- the orange groves alongside the men.
Women again; -find themselves saddled with traditional fchiale jobs. — in the kitchen andiiursery, It was not always iliis way. . says Ms. Ben-Dor. When' the coiicept and philosophy o f . k i b b u t zi m fi rs t came iiUo being,: they of-,■ fered \yomen co.mplete q cop o m i c i n d ep en den ce ■

from men and a role in life not determined b\ men.
But once the kibbutzim prospered, women were called in from the fields and put to work in the kitchen, she said. On many kibbutzim today, women arc not permitted a \oice tn economic planning and de\elopnjent. she added.
Political life is the next .ircna w here the image of a successful woman is laid to rest.
Women's power at the administrative levels is almost non-existent." she sa\s. "Forty per cent of the civil services are women but they make up onl\ 4"'i. of the high power positions,"
,As an illustrating example, she points to the three women only who have been posted as ambassadors since the state of Israel was founded.
Curiously, about tiO% of the country's lawyers and prosecuting attorneys are women, she says.
Israel has responded to the needs of its working women by providing excellent day care centres that are the envy of North America. But Israeli women work because they must, Ms, Ben-Dor says. High taxes force the need for a second income in many families.
"It is expected of an Israeli woman to wot'k. She faces strong social criticism if she is married
and has no children and stays home. There is much social pressure on her to work,"
She reserved her sharpest attacks for the rabbinic arena, which she described as '"the bleakest area Israeli women and indeed Diaspora women must contend with."
L'niike the growing numbers of North American Orthodox women who are beginning to question the assertion of rabbinic authority, Israeli Orthodox women remain "pass-i\e," Ms, Ben-Dor says.
" Fhere are no Orthodox women who are challenging the status quo, I've never heard of them publicly oppose the rabbis."
