The progress is real and continuing.
Jack Chisvin, chairman of the Toronto liaison committee, has reported these highlights from Kiryat Menachem, the Jerusalem slum neighbourhood the Toronto Jewish community has personally ^'adopted".
184 new flats are already under construction, 70 of which will house new immigrants and young couples and the rest will go to the neediest of existing neighbourhood residents.
Plans are underway for the renovation and enlarging of the badly overcrowded existing housing which will be the major building emphasis.
Teachers and social workers involved in the program are being moved right mto the neighbourhood so, as actual members of the community, they will understand the needs of the people they hope to help.
The steering committee that supervises the planning of the program includes residents of Kiryat Menachem who are able to help in establishing priorities.
Members of the Toronto liaison committee of Project Renewal are in close contact with Jerusalem, visiting the community, monitoring the activities and making certain the dollars raised are being used effectively and efficiently.
Jack Chisvin is optimistic about the process to date and the realization of the total program. Physical rehabilitation is only one phase,-'he says. *'The overall aim is to improve the quality of life of the 9,000 residents by providing them with social, recreational and child care services which have been completely lacking.
In this way, we hope to develop a sense of pride in the community.''
A simple and basic need: pride in the community. As we have in ours in Toronto, so should they have in theirs in Jerusalem.
We are one
