Synagogue: The new leader la Dr. Nachum I* Rabinovitch, Rabbi, of Charleston, S.C. A native of Montreal, he is at present at Brith Sholbm Beth Israel Synagogue, in Charleston, the oldest Asnke-nasj Synagogue in the United States; which was founded in 1854. Dr. Rabinovitch is associate editor of Hadaron, Journal of Research in' Rabbinic*. Bible and Cognate Studies, published by the Rabbinical Council of America. Also holds appointments as chaplain to the Headquarters Sixth Naval District, U.S. Navy; and lecturer in Mathematics at the University of South Carolina, in Charleston. Rabbi Rabinovitch was educated at the Sir George Williams University, in Montreal; and received his Ph.D. degree at Johns Hopkins University, in Baltimore, Maryland. He received his rabbinic ordination at the Ner Israel Ye- � ehivah, of Baltimore, where he was an honour student. Rabbi Rabinovitch is a member of the Halachah Commission of the Rabbinical Council of America, and a vice-
f(resident of the Council; is on he study committee on religion and mental health of the Medical College of South Carolina; on the board of the Mental Health Society; community advisory board on television broadcasting; national board of Torah Umesorah; Agu-dath Harabbanim; and the American Mathematical Society. In 1961 he was the guest of honour at the conference of the Federation of Synagogues of South Africa and Rhodesia, and was also on a speaking tour of that country, including special lectures at the University of Johannesburg and other institutions of learning. The congregation of the Clanton Park Synagogue wants it known through the Canadian Jewish Review that it is very proud that Rabbi Rabinovitch has consented to head it and feels that this addition to the Toronto Orthodox Rabbinate will prove of widely felt benefit to the whole community.

Sydney Midanik, chairman of the Joint Community Relations Committee, Central Region, for the affirmative; Julius Hayman, president of Ontario Zionist Region; David E. Newman, Q.C., member of the national executive, and honourary vice-president, of the Zionist Organization of Canada, for the negative. Rabbi Stuart E. Rosenberg was moderator. Questions were: Has the establishment of the State of Israel rendered the Zionist Movement impotent as a vital, creative force in Jewish Lifet 18 a separate Zionist movement necessary for the promotion of the support of Israel or can ^his be done as well, or even betterMby other Jewish agencies? Can. a revitalized Zionist movement deepen the cultural ties between the Jews of Israel and the Jews in the Diaspora? Can pro-Israel sentiment replace the. deeper loyalties of the committed, historical movement which is Zionism? The debate was won by the negative. About two hundred guests were present, Rabbi Rosenberg said that the
auestion is still debatable, and lat this does not vindicate the Zionist Organization from self-examination in facing up to new tasks in a changing world. GLASS IN COOKERY
BREADED VEAL CUTLETS
Have cutlets cut one-half inch thick. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Dip each cutlet in bread crumbs, let stand to dry, then dip in beaten e<?g, diluted with, one or two tablespoons cold water, and again in J^read crumbs. It is better to keep the meat in refrigerator fifteen minutes, so that crumbs may set. Fry in hot fat until well browned on both sides. Pqur water or tomato Juice, into frying pan, a little at a time. Cover, and let simmer forty-five minutes, or bake in oven, covered, at 300 degrees, for forty-five minutes.

two-thirds cup shortening one-third cup butter, or
one-half cup brown sugar margarine
one egg yolk two tablespoons white sugar
one-half teaspoon vanilla one tablespoon milk
two cups flour
Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg yolk, milk, and vanilla. Mix well. Add sifted flour. Roll the dough into small balls; dip them in unbeaten egg white; and roll them in nuts, candies, or chocolate bits. Put them on ungreased cookie sheet, and flatten with a fork. Bake at 400 degrees for ten minutes.
