The rabbi of to-day had a special mission to perform, he said, in acting as peace-maker between the fundamental truths of Judaism and the truths of modern science. It was, he felt, the mission of the rabbi to exjwund the Torah from the pulpit and to leave the discussion of sockology, psychology and literature to lyceum lectures. Congregations were apt to turn their rabbis into social sycophants, with the result that the ministry was coming to be regarded as a "little business for little men." For this reason he particularly urged the congregation to help the rabbi reach out to higher ideals.
The induction committee included Mesdames VV. S. Montefiore, Michael Michaels and J. Ettenberg.
