MEBIBOLAS:
With only two more weeks to go in the first half of the Meribolas League at La Salle Alleys, Miriam Matoff's fast stepping trundlers now command a full four game lead as a result of a clean sweep over Sue Lechtzier's crew last Monday afternoon. Etta Koenigsberg's pin artists kept pace just one game behind the Lechtzier aggregation by sweeping the series from Nell Matoff's pinsters, while Florence Bearg's quintette were taking the odd game from Pearl Herman's champs.
Pearl Herman copped individual honors both ways with a big series of 659 comprised of strings of 226, 233 and 200. Flome Brown was runner-up with a series of 544 and shared single game honors with a string of 233 also, Jimmy Brotman shot a series of 543 which included a string of 207, Ann Goldbloom hit them for 535 with a single of 214, and Bessie Diamond chalked up a single game of 202 in her final effort of the day.

• Ghanukah
As the little candles of Ghanukah shine brightly in your homes this week and the festive holiday spirit pervades the home, when the smell of tempting "latkes" fills the air, and happy fingers untie Ghanukah gifts, you will no doubt thrill once inore, as most of us did when children, if you happen to think of the miracle story that originated this holiday.
Women in particular in the reflection of the Ghanukah candles see the eternal light that has guided Judaism for so long through the paths of the world. They see dedication and re-dedication of the home in the flickering lights, and they pledge themselves to face life with the same courage and perseverance of the ancient Maccabees.
t Scarcity, Jewish Musicians
A call for volunteer musicians to play in a jazz orchestra of the Youth Federation has gone out. Replies of interested parties have been slow in coming in, but fairly satisfactory. This incident bears resemblance to that of the Bronislaw Huberman,
who in discussing the organization of a Jewish orchestra in Palestine, alluded to the fact that he found it hard to get musicians who played the trumpet. "If the Jews would have to capture Jericho over again, they wouldn't have enough trumpeters and would have to rely on the help of those who wield the violin bow," said Huberman.
• Potato VareniMs
A surprise and tasty addition to the dinner plate is Potato Varenikis which is composed of the following: 3 large potatoes, 2 eggs, 4 tablespoons flour, 2 tablespoons Crisco, seasoning.
Peel and boil the potatoes in salted hot \?ater. Mash while hot. Gool somewhat and add beaten eggs. Mix in the flour and season with pepper and salt. Shape into large balls. Scoop out a hole in center. Pill with leftover cooked chicken, veal, beef, or liver chopped fine and mixed with an egg. Close up the opening and flatten the balls. Roll in bread crumbs and place on hot skillet. Pry until golden brown on both sides. This recipe will serve a family of six.

The election is over. The tumult and the shouting have subsided. The time has come for some reflection on its implications for Jews.
There is no question but that the Jewish issue did play an important role in the campaign. President Roosevelt has always been friendly to Jews—^not in a patronizing way.

The Empress believed these people and immediately sent a message to Trajan, who was then on a foreign campaign, asking him to come back and punish the Jews.
Trajan did return — and Jewish blood flowed.

Hannah, the famous woman martyr of the Hanukah story, may never have had the name of Hannah. The earliest source to speak of her, the Second Book of Maccabees, does not mention her name; neither does the Babylonian Talmud. And the Midrash to Lamentations refers to her as Miriam, the daughter of Tanchum.
It is in the "Josippon, a popular historical book of the tenth century, that we find her called by that familiar name of Hannah for the first time.
Thus we do not really know the true name of this famous martyred mother of Maccabean times.

not as a dispenser of special favors. But he has never hesitated to appoint Jews to important positions, if he felt they were deserving.
He has not hesitated to use his own high office to protest against anti-Semitism abroad or to secure a more liberal immigration policy for Jews both in Palestine and the United States. Perhaps it is another testimony to the present jittery mood of American Jews that when an official without exceeding the bounds of propriety or justice on their behalf, merely does what is fair and decent, they regard him as their friend.
Governor Landon, on the other hand, was surrounded during the campaign by anti-Semites. My personal conversation with him, the opinion of those vvho have been associated with him for years, and his record indicate that he is not one of them. And yet the issues of the campaign were such that all of them were attracted to his side primarily because of their hatred of Roosevelt. Anti-Semitism Exploited Anti-Semitism was constantly exploited to associate with Jews and Communism in the public mind. Typical of this was a political advertisement appearing in a Rochester newspaper the eve of election, appealing for votes for the Republican gubernatorial candidate: "DEFEAT THE DUBINSKY - SUPPORTED GOVERNOR LEHMAN— VOTE FOR BLEAKLEY."
I am not raising the question as to whether Jews should or should not vote as Jews, In principle I am opposed to any form of Jewish political organization as un-American and unhealthy for Jews. If Philo-Semitic organizations are justified in politics, why not anti-Semitic? Jews should not unite politically as Jews. Roosevelt Victory Comforting However, when political parties accept the support of anti-Semi ties and implication become obligated to them, Jews have the moral right to consider that an important factor in their choice. In that sense this campaign shold be a lesson to those who would exploit religious prejudice for political purposes. Sometimes it is a bomerang.
In another sense the election of Roosevelt may give comfort to Jews. The country is facing a period of economy unrest. Wages have not kept pace with prices. The great industries remain unorganized. Labor is getting ready to fight for, higher wages, shorter hours and union recognition. The struggle has been postponed only imtil after election.
In such a period of unrest dema-; gogues like Father Coughlin will flourish. Anti-Semitism will be invoked for the purpose of economic exploitation. Democracy will be tried by fire. If Landon had been elected
he would have faced a hostile Congress. A divided, quarrelsome, weak government would have been easy prey for the demagogues. Nor could Landon match their eloquence. Roosevelt, with a friendly Congress, can steer the ship of state firmly through the rough waters. Roosevelt, with every orator's gift, can also speak to the masses and help to keep them sane.
I caimot conclude these reflections without an observation on the election of Governor Lehman in New York and Governor Horner in Illinois. I speak not as a Jew taking satisfaction from the election of Jews. But I do think it significant that in a period when anti-Semitism is supposed to be rife, the largest industrial states where it might have been expected to be most virulent, re-elected Jews to the highest office. I think it proves America is still sound.—(c) N. C.J.C. News Service.

MASS MEETING
striking an earnest and solemn note to the proceedings of the mass meeting of the Vancouver Youth Federation the chairman of the advisory group, Mr. E, R. Sugarman, opened ceremonies last Tuesday night by calling for a blessing of the Chanu-kah lights. Asar Rothstein and a choir of boys participated in the service.
Dave Lesser, chairman of the Federation, outlined its objects and accomplishments, to date, to an overflowing audience. It was announced that regular sessions of the public speaking group under the professional direction of Mr. Carleton Clay will begin next Wednesday night. Brief messages of encomragement were forthcoming from Rabbi Cass, Mrs. H. B. Kahn, Reverend Pastinsky, Rabbi Zlotnik and Mr, A. Rothstein.
The meeting adjourned to the lounge where Sydney Aqua, chairman of the library committee, explained the v/ork done in collecting and cataloguing volumes for the Youth library, about to be dedicated. In the last few weeks the library has been doubled in size, now numbering some six hundred volvunes and all have been catalogued. Dave Lesser then read a resolution from the Board of the Federation that Rabbi Zlotnik, "for his unstinting loyalty and unswerving devotion" have the honor of formally dedicating the books.
The motives behind the Balfour Declaration were a realization of Jewish attachment to Palestine. The Balfour declaration was not given blindly but after mature and repeated consideration in the British Cabinet. It was issued because the British people desired to make a contribution to the solution of the world Jewish problem. The Balfour Declaration was understood at that titne as meaning a Jewish State, It promised a national home, meaning life as- a nation and the status of being in Palestine as of right and not on sufferance. The Balfour declaration also contained a second part, referring to the protection of the rights of the existing non-Jewish population. The Royal Commission should interpret that part in its broadest sense and judge whether it has been carried out. We Jews came to Palestine not specifically for the purpose of enriching the land of the Arabs, but we are happy and proud that our work of reconstruction has been achieved not only without causing suffering but also conferring benefits on the Arabs. • * ♦
In other countries of immigration immigrants are generally anxious that they should not be followed by others. In Palestine, however, the Commission will find the opposite desire. It is sometimes said that the immigrants to Palestine are the 'scum of Eastern Europe', in describing the character of the Jewish pioneers. I would be proud to be counted among them.
