Rabbi S. Herschorn of Montreal.
Rabbi S. Herschorn was born in 1893 in Russia at that time under the Government of the Tzar. At the age of three he was carried, wrapped in -Tallith to the Cheder to "commence the study of the law." At five years of age the burden of learning Talmud was placed by his father on the shoulders of the young bocher. "Time", he said, "cannot be wasted. The ancestry of many generations of Rabbis demands him to become one too." The thirst for learning was too great to be covered by the Holy Learnings alone so that at the age of twelve he was also far advanced in the Trefo-Posul to the pride of his father and grandfather, both Orthodox Rabbis of the old type. was delivered at bar mitzvah. "One year later," said father "and he will say his own drosho, "sermon."' The prediction was fully realized. How the legs did shake!
The outstanding feature of Rabbi Herschorn's education was that hand in hand with the leraning of Shass and Poskins the essence of rabbinical knowledge, he was also permitted or rather encouraged to partake of the forbidden fruit from the tree of secular knowledge, as they used to call it at that time, an unusual thing.
It was the Government of Prime Minister of Stolpim and its repressions against Jews in Russia in the years of 1905 to 1908 that prevented him from attending the examinations as an externe in the Government Gymnasium* Between the ages of 14
and 19 he attended regular courses in the various Yeshivoth Rabbinical Theological Institutions. The dean, a known gaon a pupil of the foremost Rabbi Israel Salanter, the founder of Matssar, was a very strict leader. Students were expelled from the Yea-hiva for the mere reading of a newspaper for the fear that it might distract them from the Holy Learnings. Even there he was privileged to continue his secular reading of learning. He was even imparting secular knowledge to the very son of the strict dean.
Graduated as a full-fledged orthodox Rabbi he also visited the City of Odessa and had the finishing touches put up to his secular education.
When he was 21 the world war broke Out. He was at that time at-

tending all the Rabbinical duties in his home town. In 1918 when the war was over, the progroms began. He was called by his aging grandfather to another town to occupy the place of Rabbi and remained for one gear. Later he decided to migrate to Canada.
In the summer of 1921 he came to Montreal and occupied the pulpit at Temple Solomon. He is at present Rabbi of the New Beth David Synagogue corner St. Joseph Blvd. and Nelson Avenue and Temple Solomon, Clarke Street corner Bagg avenue and Congregation Beth Izchox. He is chairman of the Board of Director* of Kerim Israel and member of the Rabbinical Council of Montreal.
