MM-4 Jews Picket Against Pianist Walter Gieseking, German pianist who performed in German-held territory throughout the war, was taken into custody by immigration officials in New York, his projected tour of the United States and Canada was cancelled. The announcement was made by the Justice Department in Washington less than two hours before he was to have begun the first concert of the tour in Carnegie Hall before a capacity audience of 2,760 persons. Pickets were gathering outside the closed doors protesting against Mr. Gieseking's appearance when the cancellation was announced. Outside the auditorium were upwards of 200 pickets, most of them representing the five borough councils of the Jewish War Veterans. Others carried placards of the N. C. A. S. P. and the American Veterans Committee. A special police detail was on duty outside and inside the hall to keep order. Some of the pickets' placards bore these legends: "We fought them, don't you pay them"; "Herr Gieseking will play a funeral dirge for 6,000,000 Jews" and "Gieseking plays tonight, will Ilsa Koch play next week?" Sidney Stein, department commander of the Jewish War Veterans, kept his pickets on duty until the crowd of disappointed ticket-holders swallowed them up. He dismissed his pickets at 8.10, but the N. C. A. S. P. kept on. So did several smaller organizationsthe Jewish People's Fraternal Order, Jewish Gold Star Mothers, and the Committee for the Negro in the Arts. One portly gentleman walked up and down waving a rosary over the pickets' heads. He said he represented "Christianity." Public protests had been made by the American Jewish Congress, the Anti-Defamution League of Bnai Brith, Representative Arthur G. Klein, Democrat, of New York, and the National Council of Arts, Sciences and Professions, one of the groups that supported Henry A. Wallace in last year's Presidential campaign. According to the Justice Department, "sufficient evidence" came into the hands of immigration authorities to warrant a full-scale investigation. Just because the mercury is shivering in the bottom of the thermometer tube is no reason why we should seal ourselves into airtight chambers these early winter nights. It is better to use an extra blanket or two and leave the window open than to risk colds by sleeping in dry, stuffy rooms.
