THE JEWISH WESTERN BLTdLETIN
Pasre Three
New Year Greetings from
Rabbi Samuel Cass
Spiritual Leader of the Beth Israel Congregation
I am happy to be given the opportunity -through th e columns of the Jewish Western Bulletin to extend my heartiest greetings for the New Year to Vancouver Jewry.
Though uppermost in the minds of most Jews as they look forward to the New Year is the anxious thought for individual life and health in the year to come, it is impossible to dissociate this thought from the anxiety concerning the life of our people as a whole. Never before within the span of our individual memories has the position of the Jewish people been so precarious as it is tdoay. The facts of current history are too well known to bear repetition. We Jews must continue to arouse the conscience and moral indignalion of the entire civilized world in order that the threatening clouds which have gathered above us may soon be dispersed.
The events of the past year have brought about not only an increased sense of unity, but also an intensification of Jewish consciousness. It is well that we utilize this strength toward the creation of a planned, purposeful, expressive Jewish life. May the New Year bring life and health, joy and happiness to all of us in creative accomplishment and achievement.
Havana Jewish Community Not Harmed by Cyclone
HAVANA—The tropical cyclone that swept down on Cuba Friday and devastated the island for more than eight hours did no damage to the large Jewish community in Havana.
In the provincial towns of Matanzas, Cardenas and Camaguey where the cyclone did the most damage, many buildings were destroyed including shops belonging to Jewish residents. Wires between Havana and the provincial towns are down and details of the damage and the loss of life which is believed to be small, are lacking.

in America for the same reasons; and the future historian when writing on the American Jew in our generation will certainly lament the fact that the millions of Jews who leaving persecution and oppression behind were seeking in America the ideal of happiness—have found material riches—but lost, in their quest, a great deal of their cultural glorious inheritance. The great grandchildren of the Chash-monoim have sold many of their cherished Ideals for a golden calf in the materialistic America.
New Year's Message from Rabbi N. M. Pastinsky
Schara Tzedeck Congregation
As the leaves begin to fall and the year moves towards its end, as the harvest is gathered in and we carry home the sheaves of our crop, it is but natural that we court reflection and prepare ourselves in answer to the signs of the season, to take an inventory of our spiritual gains and losses, to hear the voice of the Shofar and to speak to our own heart about the year which has passed. Starting with the situation of Jewry all over the globe, we contract our vision, gradually, until we have reached our own country, our own city, our own family and our own selves.
Our rabbis tell us if the first of the year be a warm day the whole year will be warm. That means if today, we can rouse ourselves to righteous seii-repi^oach, to a Vv'arm desire lo make next year more successful before God, the inspiration will last, because it will not be the fruit of sudden sentiment, but of careful examination and meditation.
Momentary enthusiasm, springs up in a day, and it perishes in a day. It is foreign to life and life ignores it or sweeps it away.
But the call of Rosh Hashanah arouses feelings through thought, emotion based on conviction, a new life-program springing from an appreciation' of life's forces, of the life-giver, of the life-sustainer, of man's opportunities and obligations—is the call of Judaism.
These thoughts are a call, in order that the new year may see better thoughts and finer actions of better Jews and Jewesses—the call of Rosh Hashanah.
Thanking you for the space] you have allowed me for this message to Vancouver Jewry.
New Years Greetings
From Rabbi B. Z. Bokser
I am grateful to the Bulletin for the opportunity it is giving me to convey my greetings to the Jews of Vancouver on the occasion of the New Year.
During my year,s stay, I have learnt to appreciate Vancouver Jewry, not only the membership of the Beth Israel, but its rank and file of the Community as a whole. I recall with much pleasure not only the personal friendships I enjoyed in your midst but also the great devotion that I found in large circles for Jewish causes—a devotion that is certainly unexcelled anywhere in our Eastern cities.
I salute you on the occasion of the New Year and hope that it may bring you much personal joy and happiness and an even greater loyalty to the causes of Israel.

"Remember us unto life, 0 King who delightest in life, and inscribe us in the book of life for Thine own sake, 0 living God." (Prayer Book). Such is the prayer emanating from the first eve of Rosh Hashona till the last eve of Yom Kippur, from every heart. Remember us unto life! On the threshold of a new and unknown year we pray for life; we pray that in the coming year life may be granted to us, to our children and to all those dear to us.
There are many things for which we crave, but above all things we pray for life. And the invocation for life is more fervent, more ardent, more heartfelt on the New Year's day, when the heart of every one of us is trembling for the fate of our beloved ones.
At this period of human persecution and of human destruction, when life, "especially Jewish life has ceased to be of any value in the cruel land of bloody Germany, when the lives of hundreds of thousands are tortured and hang in the balance—during this holocaust, this unprecedented cruel action in human life which the world is daily witnessing we are stirred by only one yearning; we pray God for but one thing; life. Inscribe us in the book of life! At sight of the wanton sorrow scattered throughout the land of bloody Germany, at the continual increase in the number of the fallen and the broken, we cry to God for one thing only; to preserve our lives, remember us unto life I
Life! Is not this the greatest gift? Is not this for which we pray continually? From beginning to the ena of our Rosh Hashona service, we turn our eyes heavenward with the petition on our lipe: Yea, cause Thou to be well with us continually and to keep us alive as at this day, and as for the stricken and persecuted brethren in Germany, let our prayers be as follows (Prayer): "Our Father in Heaven! We pray Thee for life! We pray Thee to vouchsafe unto us and unto our children that the coming year may bring us life and health and happiness. Grant us a year of peace. Spare us from care and desolating grief. Remove from us distress and fear. Help us to lead a good life, a godly life, a Jewish life. May the prayers we have offered this day purify our heart and strengthen us in our faith in Thee. Have mercy, 0 God, with. all Thy children, inspire them with love for one another. May trouble and persecution cease and cause the light of peace to shine throughout the world. May the time draw near, when nation shall no more lift up the sword against nation; when none shall hurt nor des-
A Frank Discussion
On Jewish Education
By K. Katznelson
With the approach of the New Year, when most of the Jewish organizations will be appealing to the Jew to consider carefully many serious matters, we consider that we, the Talmud Torah Board, ought not to be ignored at this festive season; and we too, ask the indulgence of every Jew in this city while we analyze carefully the many problems confronting our work.
While I ask your attention for a few minutes only, I have in my own mind, been reviewing this problem the whole year of my Talmud Torah activities.
These questions have been gnawing at my heart constantly—"Where are the children?" We all know about their going to public school, but— "what about their education as Jews." Whence shall come the generation that will take our place as Jews, and still know why they are such? What about our institutions? Will a man with no Jewish spirit, without the interests of the Jewish nation at heart, bother his head about them? And so on.
Half a year ago, in this same paper, I had the pleasure of expressing my gratification at the splendid results of the semi-annual examinations. At the same time reports by several authoritative examiners were printed, but evidently no parents were sufficiently impressed to see the desirability of sending their children to "Chader".
I later had something to say about the programme of our school, and the magnificent standard of the same; but as far as increasing the registration of pupils was concerned, the words were lost, as an echo in the desert.
One is forced to conclude that neither the enormous work, not the efficiency of our school are the deciding factors which the parent in considering whether or not to place his child under our supervision. The reason must be sought in a different direction.
I have been much too interested in this work not to know that there has been a good deal of gossip current concerning the Talmud Torah, Some say, "Oh well, the knowledge acquired in Hebrew school is all right; but why bother the children with Hebrew when Yiddish or English are so much easier?" "Or," says another, "the school is too religious in character, and the children will never retain anything taught them in Talmud Torali." In fact, so many similar criticism are prevalent, that space does not permit me to mention them all. Instead let (Continued on Page 6)
troy, when the whole human race shall work together for righteousness and justice, for mercy and truth. Amen.
