Centre names drama PATRICIA MURPHY Patricia Murphy has been engaged by the Jewish Community Centre to offer courses in creative drama and speech for children. Miss Murphy is a licentiate of Trinity College, London, highest degree awarded in the field, and has had considerable experience as an instructor. "The purpose of creative drama," notes Miss Murphy, "is and speech instructor to encourage spontaneous expres sion of ideas through pantomine and improvisatation. Given situation, the child presents his own simple characterization. In group participation he gains con fidence and learns to share his imaginative ideas in relation to daily experiences." This course will be for children, ages eight to 11, and wil be offered Tuesdays after school The Speech Instruction course is offered to children ages six to eight, designed as a "fun" class to assist children to speak clearly and correctly. Conversational games, impromptu talks and exercises in diction, modulation and pitch without developing an "elocutionized" manner of speech, are included. This course will be given on Wednesdays after school. Youth Affairs U.S.Y. opens the season with a barbecue and splash party on Sunday, Sept. 10, 4 p.m., at the home of Tracy Segal, U.S.Y. chapter president, 6816 Hudson St. All U.S.Y.'ers and those interested in joining will be welcomed at the annual kick-off. (1965), and is now entering his final year as a Ph.D. candidate in chemistry. He is working on national research of Canadian scholarships and is active at the Centre as a counsellor for eenagers. Mr. Waldman has also participated in a number of repeats held at U.B.C. Rabbi John M.
