'^riday, June 6, 1969 JEWISH WESTERN BULLETIN Page Three UNDAY, JUNE 8th, 2 P.M. AT IX.C TEST AGAINST 1969: THE CURRENT SITUATION Except for the publication of a limited number of Jewish prayer bojDks, Jewish deprivations iii Soviet Russia continue. During 1965-1966, Soviet press was relatively free of extreme forms of anti-Jewish propaganda. But early in 1967, articles attacking Israel and "the Zionist conspiracy" reappeared. Following the Six-Day War of June, 1967, this stream of articles became a flood and now included vicious cartoons clearly directed to arouse traditional hatred against Jews. S>tories in leading newspapers told of "Zionist conspiracy to rule the world.^'-Israel: was'pictured as only one arnx of this Zionist hydra. As described in the Soviet press, the nimiber of American Zionists working toward world domination was as large or larger than the total Jewish population! The Soviet public learned the new language easily: Zionist stands for "Jew", just as in earlier years, the comparative words were "parasite" and "rootless cosmopolitan." Most frightening development of 1968 was that anti-Semitism spread from the U.S.S.R. to other Red-bloc nations. Recent crises in Poland and Czechoslovakia were met with official explanations which placed blame on a handful of Jews, many of whom were publicly and conspicuously ousted from their jobs. OPPRESSIOIM OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY IN THE SOVIET UNIaiM Writers giVen awards for anti-Semitic literature Among the latest "anti-Zionist," anti-Jewish diatribes published in the Soviet Union is yet another, "Judaism and Zionism" by the notorious Trofim Kichko, author of the infamous "Judaism Without Embellishment". The new book alleges that "the ideologists of Judaism" teach Jews to "hate people of other faiths and even exterminate them." Kichko was rewarded officially for his "atheistic" work.
