Hydro puts $7 million into fisheries A contribution of $7 million from B.C. Hydro will put a new spark into fish habitat projects around the province, both in direct work by the Crown corporation and through partnership with Fisheries Renewal B.C.(FsRBC). B.C. Employment and Investment Minister Mike Farnworth and Fisheries Minister Dennis Streifel made the announcement Oct. 7 at a B.C. Hydro dam in Campbell River. Some $2 million of the $7 million will be spent on fish enhancement projects on river systems affected by Hydro operations while another $5 million will go to FsRBC to support community-based habitat renewal and restoration projects. Hydro's $5 million is the largest partnership contribution for Fisheries Renewal which itself is expected to spend $9 million this year in fisheries programs involving habitat renewal, fisheries diversification and valued-added processing. "Salmonid renewal projects encourage working partnerships between communities, First Nations, fisheries workers, businesses and non-profit societies," said FsRBC chair Joy Thorkelson. "We hope Hydro's contribution inspires others to become Fisheries Renewal partners." Fisheries Renewal also launched a series of new projects this month, including several new product initiatives as well as a program to open shellfish harvesting on the North Coast. Several companies, including Fjord Pacific, Silver Harvest Foods, Opportunity Traders and the B.C. Salmon Marketing Council and the B.C. Institute of Technology will get FsRBC funding to initiate commercial production of various value-added products, develop marketing programs and conduct training courses to enable plants to meet new seafood export certification standards. Six projects are also slated for funding under shellfish initiatives, including two on the North Coast that will enable companies to develop effective methods of testing local shellfish. Currendy, commercial shellfish harvesting along much of the much of the North Coast is closed because there is no easily accessible and credible method available to test for biotoxins that may be harmful to humans.
