ILWU Ladles Urge Tests Be Stopped
International Longshoremen's Union W o m e n's Auxiliaries meeting recently in North Bend Oregon, called for banning hydrogen bomb tests, urged expanded trade with China, and requested immediate action in support of civil rights legislation.
The delegate meeting also took special note of a campaign by Senator Richard Neuberger on the problems of cigarette smoking and cancer.
Several of the Northwest auxiliaries have successfully circulated petitions calling attention , to the existing danger of continuing H- and A-bomb tests and' have sent letters in this regard to President Eisenhower.
ILWU's lobbyist for the recent legislative session in the capital city of Salem, Ernie Baker of Local 8, Portland, was guest speaker before the auxiliary representatives and outlined labor's fight this' year to promote legislation of interest to the union and to defeat anti-labor laws.
Baker gave high praise to Local 12, North Bend members for the work they are doing toward the establishment of a community college for Southwestern Oregon and also thanked the auxiliaries for their financial assistance to maintain an observer at the legislative session.
Reports to the auxiliary council included a good record of membership gains, work being done on a dental survey, the part being taken by the auxiliaries in the great "Bloody Thursday" parade in Portland, and the support given by the auxiliaries to camperships for crippled children.

Shoreworker Russell was employed at Phoenix Cannery in Steveston, an operation of Anglo B.C. Packing Company.
The Shoreworkers Welfare plan which went into effect on' July 1 of this year, provides a $500 death benefit and also gives a sliding scale of coverage for workers who lose employment as the result of illness or off-the-job accidents.

SALMON STEAKS 2 pounds fresh salmon steaks '   Salt and pepper drained
1 can (5 oz.) mushrooms, J/t cup butter, melted
2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon grated onion
Season steaks lightly on both sides then place in a greased baking pan. Slice mushrooms and combine with melted butter, lemon juice and grated onion; pour over steaks. Place in a hot oven (450 deg. F.) and bake, allowing about 10 minutes cooking time per inch thickness of steaks. When flesh will flake easily on testing with a fork, remove steaks to heated serving platter and serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.
<J     O O SAUCY FISH STICKS 1 package (16 oz.)fish sticks OR
2 packages (8 or 10 oz. fish sticks
1 cup canned pineapple juice
2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons vinegar
li teaspoon salt V2 cup canned pineapple chunks
V< cup coarsely chopped green pepper
V/i tablespoons cornstarch 2 tablespoons cold water
Separate fish Sticks and place in a shallow, greased pan. Heat as directed on the package. Meanwhile prepare the sauce. Combine pineapple juice, sugar, vinegar and salt and bring to boiling point. Add pineapple and green pepper. Blend together cornstarch and water and stir into the hot mixture. Cook and stir over medium heat until the sauce thickens. Serve over hot fish sticks accompanied by rice, if desired. Makes 4 servings.
OYSTER STEW 1 pint oysters  with liquid Vi cup butter, melted 1 quart rich mSlk, scalded V/2 teaspoons salt Vs teaspoon pepper Few grains nutmeg (optional) Add oysters and their liquid to  melted  butter  and simmer over   low   heat   until oysters plump up and their thin edges show signs of ruffling. This will take only about 3 minutes. Combine   oysters   and   liquid with scalded milk and stir in seasonings. Serve immediately. Makes 6 servings.

Deportation Stay Ordered
On August 23, Unites States District Court Judge John C. Bowen issued an order staying 'the deportation of Mrs. Hazel Anna Wolf to Canada from August 26 to September 4. A hearing will be held that day before District Court Judge William J. Lindberg on a new motion filed _ by Mrs. Wolf's attorney. The motion contends that Mrs. Wolf is not an alien but in fact a citizen of the United States born abroad of a citizen parent.
Mrs. Wolf's mother was born in the United States and in 1892 married a British subject in Ta-coma, Wash. In 1898, two weeks before Mrs. Wolf was born, her parents went to Victoria, B.C.
In a recent Search of the law on citizenship, her attorney, John Caughlin, discovered that prior to 1907 a woman did not lose her Citizenship when she married a foreign person and that Mrs. Wolf has met her residence requirements of a person born abroad which were established in the 1952 law.
Meanwhile, the only sure guarantee that Mrs. Wolf will not be deported on September 4 is favorable action by U.S. Attorney-General Herbert Brown-ell on her petition for suspension of deportation, according to the Washington Committee for the Protection of Foreign Born.
The Committee is asking all persons who deplore the separation of a 60 year old grandmother from her family, employment, and social security for her old age, to write Brownell urging that he suspend the deportation.
