Two otnin 9 By BEN NOBLEMAN TORONTO — When 1.200 members of Variety Clubs International descended on this city recently — "tents" folded under their arms — among the delegates to the show business organization's convention were two Is-iraelis. It's not unusual that Daniel Angel of Jerusalem and Ora Teveth of Tel Aviv should find themselves participating in the week-long hoopla, since Variety Clubs is opening a rehabilitation centre in Ashkelon this summer and has launched a fund-raising campaign for a $5 million community centre in the nation's capital. ' Israelis have long been involved in the organization, which now aids some 1,000 handicapped children under the age of 18 in the country. And they, too, have their "star" support. Popular actor Tbpol serves as honorary president of Israel's Variety Club, while UN Ainbassador ChaimHer-zog was the first to hold the chief post. Mrs. Teveth, a graduate teacher, has served as executive director of Tent 51 for the past seven years, while Angel, an eighth generation Sabra, is chief barker (president) of lent 5. Both enthusiastically described the organization's efforts in Israel. At present, the group runs a mobile cinema unit which daily travels to homes, schools and hospitals to visit children who are unable to make the outing to local. m o v i e theatres. A fleet of ''Sunshine . Coaches", donated by friends, from abroad, transports handicapped youngsters. But the most ambitious undertaking is the multi-million dollar Jerusalem Variety Community Cen-.tre for Child and Family Development and Rehabilitation. The city has already allocated 6,000 square metres of land adjacent to the Knesset and the Health Ministry will match each dollar raised by the Variety Gubs, whose goal is $2 million. The planned institution will aid in diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of handicapped children, offering training sessions and guidance to parents. Incorporated into the complex will be a nursety school for normal children, to facilitate the integration of handicapped youth into a normal educational franiework; In addition, the centre will serve the entire community, through, a net\york of 26 mother and child clinics. Staff trained at the complex will eventually screen close to 92% of Jerusalem's child population as a preventive service. These Israeli projects are just a small part of the effort s sponsored bv Variety Clubs International which has raised more than $250,000,000 since itis inception in 1927. Variety Club of Ontario, Tent 28, raised over 5500,000 last year alone. The tent has supported the Variety Village Vocational School in Torontp. a research centre developing electronic limbs for children with congenital Maj.-to address (flmier TORONTO— Major-General Yona Efrat, commander of the Golani Brigade which was responsible for the capture of the Golan Heights during the" Six Day War, will make his first visit here on Monday, June 21, to iddress the Beth Tikvah Congregation Bond dinner. In a long and extraordinary military career, Geri.'Efrat has taken part in some of the most heroic and dangerous missions of Israel's defense forces. As well as the Golan Heights capture, he was among the liberators of Eilat during the War of Independence, and took part in the Sinai Campaign and the conquest of Sharm-el-Sheikh in 1956. Morty Mogil, the guest of honor of the Beth Tikvah dinner, has served for three years as the congregation's Israel Bond chairman. Beth Tikvah was in the forefront of Toronto congregations which made large-scale institutional pur-, chases of bonds. Yom Ha'atzmaut pop music spectacular at Jerusalem's large Binyanei Ha!ooma auditoriiim, whfch, for the first time this year, was not a competition but a regular show in which several top performers each performed one old song and one new song. The singers were the best of what Israel today has to offer — Yehoram . Gaon. Matti Caspi, Ilanit (who has evolved into a glamorously dynamic concert-torch singer) Yigal Bashan, and s e v e r a 1 others (Chava Alberstein wasn't present as she was just about to 'gwe birth to her second child). But Micki Kam, as emcee, stole the show when she displayed her own unique, cabaret-comedienne singing skills. Particularly memorable was a brief number she did which spoofed Henry Kissinger, Her friendly, kooky wit. combined with her full, straightforward voice, comprises a surefire success. International renown has already been achieved by the female trio Chocolate. Menta & Mastic, who placed sixth in the Eurovision song competition held this past April, on the strength of a new Matti Caspi composition. Within Israel, one of the new rock groups is Tamiriuz. which was, while I was here, staging a show entitled Emfiol the Orange Season. The Pla- tina group, starring flautist Roman Kunzman and drummer Aharon Kamin^ sky, remains one of the best jazz enseiribles anywhere in the world today, and I was fortunate enough to see them live, in concert, at the beautiful newjJerusalem Theatre, when they performed brilliantly original jazz improyisations based on the music of Debussy. Only one Israeli movie was being screened anywhere in the country this time; but at least two (and probably more) Israeli co-productions are in the works for release in the near future. The most significant of these films-in-progress is the movie version of Hugh Schoenfeld's provocative theory on Christ, The Passover Plot. On stage, Mendele Mocher Sforim's classic The Travels of Be^jamhi ID (the Yiddish version of Don Quixote) is being dramatized (with new songs by Naomi Shemer) and one-man satirical revues by Shaike Ophir. Israel Gurion (son of B-G) and Shimon Dzigan (in Yiddish, accompanied by Ophira Gluska and Carol Feldman) remain highly popular. One of the most popular light satirical revues is a local spoof two-man show by Danny Litani, (composer of Volcano), and Jonathan Gefen entitled Letters to the Editor. But the most discussed revue, NUnii Rosh, was not a stage show but a TV series. I'll discuss it in a future article. The classical music scene is also active. While I was here, Zubin Mehta conducted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 with Artur Rubinstein as guest soloist; Jean-Pierre Ram-pal made a highly-acclaimed concert tour which included not only he Unisex Hair Styling Gabriel • IMPORTANT MESSAGE • If your hair is too fine, or top curly or wavy, Or damaged; and you cannot enjoy the newest styles.. . o COME TO GABRIEL! • He has the training, experience, and skill to look after your problem . . : and you will feel good, and be up-to-date! 130BLOOR ST.
