The Canadian Jewish News, Thursday, September 2, 1993-Page 5 Canada Tories ByRONCSILLAG TORONTO — The last nine years of Conservative government have resulted in the "unravelling of the Canadian dream," veteran Liberal membier of Parliament Herb Gray said at a fundraiser for him last week. Gray cited a recent poll showing Canadians feel, for the first time, that their children will not do as well as they have. 'i find this troubling. I find this shocking," said Gray, Canada's longest-serving Jewish MP. Heavy hitters in the Jewish community gathered for the small meeting organized by MP Robert Kaplan, who is not seeking re-election in York Centre, the riding he's held since 1974. Those invited were remindwl that with Kaplan's departure from politics. Gray could become the sole Jew- ish MP from Ontario, provided no other Jewish candidates are elected in this years's vote and provided Gray holds on to the Windsor West seat he's held continuously since 1962. The Liberals * 'will do everything they can to restore the Canadian dream," Gray said, adding that the first priority of a Liberal government will be job creation and stimulating economic grdwth. Gray tore into Prime Minister Kim Campbell, who "left the right-wing Socreds in British Columbia because she liked Brian Mulroney so much.'' Campbell' 'wants to carry on" many of Mulroney's unpopular measures. It was Mulroney who brought the jecession to Canada sooner than was necessary by "engineering" an economic slowdown to curb inflation. Gray charged. Gray said that when it comes to Israeli die views of his leader, Jean Chretien, "are in sync and in harmony" with those of Jewish Canadians. Chretien has "a personal understanding" of Mideast issues and js "committed" to strengthening Canada's relations with Israel — all a resuh of the leader's "deeply held libertarian values." But Gray dodged a question on the pursuit of Nazi war criminals in Canada and the Liberals' track recond on the dossier. Gray cited last spring's annual Canada-Israel Committee meeting, at which Chretien was received "warmly." Introduced at the meeting was Barry Camjpbell, the Liberal candidate in St. Pa:urs, now held by the retiring Barbara McDougall. Campbell ex-' pressed the hope that with his election, the net amount of Jewish MPs from Ontario would iremain the same after the next vote. Sen.
