Israeli Arab and Jew pfomote dialogue
RON CSILLAG
TORONTO -
Israel should ininiedia-tely relinquish control over ihe West; Bank and the Gaza strip, agree two promoters of Arab-Jewish dialogue. But: .Muhammad Dar-' . uwshi, an Arab Israeli, and Rabbi Daniel Hartman. a Jewish Israeli, have dif-; terent reasons for believing -that. ■.
Speaking to over 200 people at Holy Blossom Temple recently on the need to establish dialogue between Arabs and Jews in Israel,Darawshi and Hartman also agreed that Arabs in Israel face severe discrimination and that Rabbi Meir Kahane, the militant advocate of the expulsion of all Arabs from Israel and occupied lands, is the greatest threat to Arab-Jewish harmony.
Darawshi, a parliamon--. tary assistant to a Labor •member of the Knesset arid a founder of the. Arab Peace Now Movement, said a Palestinian state on ; the West Bank and Gaza is ■■.essenliai."" but that he wouldn't move there > because he is an Israeli. And he said he uould Tight an Israeli annexation' •of the West Bank and : Gaza.
■'.Annexing the West Bank would be apartheid tfor Arabs li\ ing there)."" Darau sh r coniended.
Hartmani who moved to Israel frorn New York City in 1971, said if Israel hangs on to the West Bank, captured from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day War, it would "take the soul put" of the country. "We w'ould be left with a couhtr\ that's.secure but not worth saving. For pure Jewish rea.sons. Israel must remove its control over the ; West Bank.';"
Israel's security, he add- . ed: is not the only problem the We.st iBank, poses. It also poses, a Jewish ethical dilemma because for the first, time in their history; Jews are wielding power in their own country and have . control over Arabs living there.
Israel; he stated, .has createil a new pj-oblem tor Jews: the deepening of conflicts among Jews themselves. "It's not so easy, to be moral any-mpre." Harthian said. . .While acknowledging that there is "an Arab problem'' in Israel, Hartman maintained Jews must approach it from a strictly, religious and moral standpoint/
"Our first problem is a battle with Judaism. We . have a choice!. We must Stan talking as Jews."
Hartman added that Kahane "does not exhaust all Israel's evils."'
Darawshi agreed stopping Kahane is the First step in a grassroots Arab-Jewish dialogue because of what he sees as a continuing shift to the extreme right- in Israel, especially among youth.
He said Israeli—Arabs are treated as second class citizensT" "and sometimes as third and fourth class" citizens.
Some of the trappings
of discrimination against Arabs in Israel include paying three times the tuition fees Jewish students pay in university; receiving as little as
one-third the social Jews Kahane says about partners alongside Jews schools along with the various social action pro-assistance Jews get and Arabs in the Knesset, "because that is what Old Testament. gram.s in Israel, including having to carry an iden- Darawshi added.
