turn a director of Mau's bank. Mau and his associates have ventured into Hong Kong, where a wholly-owned company, Empress, Limited, operates the Empress Hotel in Kowloon.
He also is a director of the Hawaii Islanders ball club, president of World Enterprises, Limited, and holds a financial advisory post with Chinese World, San Francisco newspaper.
With many of his major goals accomplished or nearing completion locally, Mau is turning his eyes to the rich markets of the Far East. He hopes to gain a foothold in the financial structure of Guam. He considers Guam an integral part of the economic booms that has been building up in the Pacific Basin.
Mau's optimism is shared by McDonald, who has encouraged American Security Bank to open a branch in Agana, Guam's capital.
McDonald said 33 U.S. bank branches have been opened in Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Hong Kong the past year and there is no reason why Hawaii interests shouldn't capitalize on Guam's rising economy. Mau also sees a future in Guam's tourist industry, catering to New Zealanders and Australians.
With his crowded business activities, Mau doesn't have much time with his family. So he's up by 6 each morning, and breakfasts with Mrs. Mau and their three daughters and one son. Their older son is studying on the Mainland.
He drives his children to school, and by 8 a.m. is ready to start the day. A series of morning conferences is followed by lunch in his office—which now is on the 18th floor of the new building.
Afternoon meetings generally go past 5 p.m., after which follow evening conferences at his Lau Yee Chai, where he entertains many local and Mainland guests.
It usually is 11 p.m. when he is able to get home to his Wilhelmina Rise mansion, from where he has been watching his own creation—the Wai-kiki Plaza Building—sprout up into the Waikiki sky the past several months.
It is safe to say that Mau will watch many other projects grow in the years ahead.
