IN THIS SPACE of the previous issue a dispatch from San Francisco told how the City Council there has approved a $55,500 budget for the construction of a Chinese archway at the entrance to Chinatown. A reader thought the idea so meritorious that he was moved to pen a few suggestions for Vancouver residents to mull over.
He writes : "Have a few ideas here that may provide food for thought to those interested in improving the general appearance of Chinatown. You people have yet to tap the full potentials of this part of our city as a tourist bait. This is what I have in mind: "1. A Moongate, modelled after those prevalent in China, should be built at the entrance to a Chinese tea garden to be erected at a suitable location in this part of the city. That section of False Creek in the vicinity of Georgia viaduct should be developed and utilized during summer to provide boat rides on sampans and junks to tourists. These conveyances should be done up in bright colors with tinted sails and lit by lanterns for moonlight trips.
The bandstand in Alexander Park should be converted into a miniature teahouse. Lanterns adorning the trees outside this pagoda-style structure will provide exotic backdrop for danciner to Chinese music. Brighton up Chinatown proper with a fsw coats of paint. Have professional tour guides in native costume pose for pictures with tourists on the street. Patriachs and lovely ladies abounding would also make wonderful subject material for souvenir photos. These snaps wi,l be the best boosters for your Chinatown. I wonder it' a fabric pagoda-patterned sunshade couM be manufactured for beach and lawn use? Excellent advertising gimmick to brine: the sightseers into Chinatown.
