AS THE FALL school term begins, thousands of students across the land are flocking back to high schools and colleges to resume studies for a professional objective. We applaud their decisions because both high school and college education are an absolute necessity in this day and age, if we do not wish to sentence ourselves to a lifetime of mediocrity.
In a world of automation, chemistry, radar and computers, what place is there for someone who shuns education like a haunted house? What chance is there for the young man or woman to whom mathematics, geography and history is a closed book?
Elsewhere in this issue, a dispatch from Sacramento reaffirms our earlier observations that job opportunities are widening by the miles for all minority groups―providing we put our learning machine to good use.
Those who stay away from high school and college will remain firmly chained to the lowest rung of the ladder of life. Those parents' who condone and excuse these lazy-bones are assuming a heavy burden of guilt. Of course we do not refer to those who are financially unable to provide for a better education of their teen-agers.
The demands of industry, commerce, finance, education, science and government have become so great that there are not sufficient competent new recruits to man the ranks of its elite corps. So regardless of race, color or creed, there is plenty of room at the top.
Those who forego high school and other educational opportunities will not be among them.
THE EDITORS.
