IJ^C Promotes Far East Week
THE GROWING IMPORTANCE and significance of the Far East in world affairs was the goal of an extensive study launched by UBC students of Oriental language and culture.
The program from Jan. 9 to 13, sponsored by the Chinese Varsity Club, the Nisei Varsity Club and the East Asia Society, was held in conjunction with the opening of the Department of Asian Studies at University of British Columbia, where it is hoped will become the leading centre for Asian studies in North America.
A Far East Festival would have been a more apt description of the occasion, for the program ranged from serious discussions to cookies and bazaars at tea time. A series of noon hour lectures at Buchanan Building was delivered by experts on Chinese and Japanese affairs, including Dr. Yin Shou Che, Consul General of China who spoke on "The Present and Future of

Free China." His talk was augmented with a 45 minute film on "Taiwan Today." Prof. Ping-ti Ho of UBC's history department spoke on "The First Decade of Communism in China." The secretary general of the Institute of Pacific Relations in New York, Dr. William Holland, who recently became the director of the Dept. of Asian Studies, spoke on "The Importance of China and Japan in the World Today." An award-winning Japanese film "Ugitsu Monagatari" was shown on another programmed hour. Prof B. C. Binning, head of UBC's fine arts dept., dealt with "Arts and Architecture of Japan."
The public was treated to a rare display of Asian arts and skills on a Far East Night at International House. The Chinese exhibits were assembled by this reporter with the cooperation of Richard Cheng, vice president of Chinese Overseas Students Association and
