Jbea/i Reader:
IT IS A MATTER of regret that the UBC Senate should fail to take action to compel two Greek letter societies to remove the discriminating clauses from their charters which exclude Jews, Negroes and Asiatics from membership.
While mealy-mouthed apologists may argue that exclusion from membership of any private club is an inalienable democratic right, such argument rings hollow when you consider that these campus fraternities are violating the spirit, if not the letter, of the recently enacted federal Bill of Rights.
Moreover, during the 1954 faculty inquiry, the two societies involved claimed that as academic fraternities, they too, are opposed to discrimination. The restrictions on their charters, they admitted, are forced upon them by their parent American national organizations. The two fraternities pledged to work for reform.
Now seven years later, nothing has been done. The two groups continue on their merry course to defend, if not champion, the policies of their parent organizations in practicing racial segregation.
It would be the societies' own business to pursue their individual program and interests without public scrutiny were it not for the fact that these two fraternities are officially recognized student organizations under university discipline.
By retaining outmoded policies, the two societies are doing irreparable harm to the reputation of Canada. For the end result of its bigoted activities can only redound to discredit the federally supported student exchange program, run contrary to the liberal traditions of the Canadian people and deal a shattering blow to this province's pride in its leading institution of learning.
We echo the Sun's sentiments that recognition should be withdrawn.
