A LONG time ago some wit referred to Brotherhood Week (Feb 20 to 26 this year) as Take-An-Oriental-Out-To-Lunch Week. Since then there have been more and more irreverent references and even loud guffaws at an observance that has the loftiest of intentions.
A cynic may consider this annual ritual increasingly funny. Finding himself the focal point of a plea for justice and equality on a one-week-a-year basis does have an amusing aspect for most members belonging to minority groups.
But we are not cynics. For thousands of years, followers of both the Jewish and Christian faiths have been aware of the Divine Commandment: "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself," one of the statutes delivered by Moses which became the law of civilized man.
Chinese philosophers, too, long ago had espoused essentially the same doctrine: "Around the four seas, all men are brothers."
It's a sad commentary that many in our midst have yet to accept this philosophy. For acceptance to them, would mean being tolerant of others needs and wants. They fail to realize that we are all members of one family — Homo sapien is the name; and we are living on the same planet. The only difference is that our forefathers were born in different countries and lived in completely different climates and environments.
There is a need to reappraise human values. It is time we recognize that individual worth is measured in terms of qualities and virtues and not by nationality and racial origin.
Peace and harmony can prevail in this far-from-perfect world only if all races learn to respect each other's differences and try to get along without prejudice of any kind.
If Brotherhood Week serves no other purpose then to remind us of this indubitable logic, then its continuance is more than justified.
