The Hastings and Columbia branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia, which has been in temporary premises, moves into its handsome new building on the original site today.
Manager George W. Chalklin, assistant manager George D. Wong and staff are justifiably house-proud ol their new quarters which are equipped to provide the most modern in banking services. These include a night depository, two coupon booths, a conference room for customers' business meetings and a convenient ground floor location for the vault and safety deposit boxes.
The interior of the new premises has been attractively decorated in golden yellow and oatmeal tones. One source placed the estimated cost of this new building at $400,000.
Because of its proximity to Chinatown proper, this branch of the Scotia Bank has always been known to the Chinese populace as the "Chinatown Branch". This designation is not without justification considering that almost one half of its two dozen or so staff members are of Chinese origin, including its assistant manager George D. Wong.
Established in 1948 under the managership of E. D. Blaire, the branch opened with a grand total of only six staff members. Today, less than two decades later, the number of employees has more than quadrupled. Part of the reason for this rapid growth lies in the bank's progressive policy in its dealings with customers.
"The opening of this new building will enable us to provide better service than ever before," commented manager George W. Chalklin. "We have a complete banking service here and the new facilities are at our customers' disposal at all times."
