Nancy Kwan Scores In Musical
HONG KONG: "If you think Nancy was good as Suzie Wong, you oughta see her as Linda Low ―she's just terrific!" That was H.K. Wong speaking >~that ball of energy of San Francisco Chinatown's business and social community. "I've seen every footage of the 4Flower Drum Song rushes so far," H.K. (sometimes called "Hongkong Wong" by his friends) said in his Ambassador Hotel suite. "Nancy's dancing is something that surprised even the hardbitten Hollywood folks. She's fast becoming the new darling of the American movie world!"
Pretty extravagant words but H.K. is backing every syllable of it. With Albert Lim, H.K. Wong (both American Chinese with firm cultural ties with the old country), is technical consultant to the "Flower Drum Song" production.
"Our job is to keep the Grant Avenue atmosphere from running to fantasy. The picture's set in San Francis-
co Chinatown, you know, and they're trying to have things as accurately in details as possible."
H.K. and Albert Lim are with a party of 16 tourists (mostly American-Chinese) from San Francisco and Los Angeles visiting Hongkong.
"We are also bearing official greetings from San Francisco's Mayor Christopher to top city officials on our itinerary," H.K. said. The tour takes in Tokyo, Taipei, Manila, Hongkong and Singapore. But H.K. and his wife, Honey, are stopping here for a three-week visit, their first.
"Flower Drum Song" is a near to total Asian cast. Top stars are Nancy Kwan and Miyoshi Umeki ("who won an Oscar in "Sayonora") and Hollywood's Nisei actor, Jimmy Shigeta. And H.K. speaks glowingly of our Nancy. "She's a real doll. Everybody likes her. Director Henry Koster told me that Nancy's not only an extremely talented girl, she's also hard working
