TN HIS summarizing speech marking 1 the end of the Commonwealth Study Conference here, Prince Philip praised Canada for providing an excellent study of her approaches to her citizens of ethnic origins. "There are two national paths possible to minority groups," he said, "the melting pot and the Canadian way."
What Prince Philip terms the Canadian way refers to our acceptance of the individual ethnic groups on the basis of unity with diversity. He singled out Vancouver's Chinese community as an example of this acceptance. The illustration is maturely considered. For here's a group whose customs and traditions have been transplanted onto an altogether different soil―that of Canadian cultural mileau―yet it has managed to preserve its characteristics.
There has been much discussion in various quarters about the Canadian identity. The unanimous conclusion is that the many ethnic groups comprising the Canadian nation should strive to understand and respect each other's differences. This is the pith of Canadian culture.
To underscore this Canadian culture, we should heed the warning of Prince Philip who stresses that "it is essential for minorities to take part in the common life of the community whatever customs and cultures they wish to encourage among themselves. Minorities and their general characteristics must be known and understood if they are to be accepted by the majority. Self segregation by the minority and ignorance by the majority is the real danger to a mixed community."
We are also in whole-hearted agreement with Prince Philip's counsel that ethnic groups must not live in the past but to keep their culture in step with that of the majority because "culture is an expression of the characteristics of a people and to be effective it must remain alive and reflect the aspirations of each generation."
Indeed the strength and virility of our Canadian culture lies in our recognition of the need to foster proper climate for the nurturing and growth of a multi-culture nation.
