-Year-Old Poetess Succumbs to Polio
Child Invalid Leaves 580 Poems

T〇KYO: "Wind, wind, I cannot see, 1 but still wind is there. Look at the willow branches, and look at the chrysanthemum leaves. Do you see them moving? Wind, it touches my face too. But wind is so interesting."
This was the first poem little Meg-umi Murata of Tokyo composed, at the age of two years and 8 months, as she was undergoing treatment for paralytic polio.
Megumi then wrote 580 more poems about trees, the mail man, her parents, love, God and heaven, all precisely recorded in five notebooks. Dr. Teiju Kobayashi who examined her carefully, said, "It's miraculous. I don't know how to explain it from a medical standpoint. But I cannot deny the fact of this unusually early maturity." But he added that 4'perhaps all the energy that would normally go to the entire body, concentrated in this case

Megumi was stricken with paralytic polio when she was only one month old. A doctor's record then showed that she was unable to walk, talk or sit straight. "I'm sorry, but your daughter is an imbecile," the doctor told her mother, Mrs. Ikuyo Murata. It was that time, Mrs. Murata recalled that she made up her mind to fight it.
"Megumi was partly paralyzed from her neck down," she said "but she could listen and memorize things remarkably well, so I couldn't believe that she was an imbecile." The mother first taught the baby to communicate with her in terms of pictures and letters, instead of speaking. Megumi learned it rapidly, and by her second birthday, she could read all the Kata-kana and Hiragana (basic Japanese alphabets) plus a number of Chinese
