i^HINATOWN NEWS has always I urged greater participation by Chinese Canadians in public life of the larger society to permit the flowering of our new political status. So it is with elation and gratification that we see Mrs. Gladys Chong enter the contest for a seat on the Park's Board in the forthcoming civic election.
On the basis of her community service, Mrs. Chong should make a strong candidate; and if successful she should be an outstanding park's board member. The record speaks for itself. Here are some of the organizations and activities with which she has been devoting her time and energy : immediate past president of the Grandview PTA, director of the Grandview Community Centre Association, Chairman of the Grandview Queen contest committee.
Her planks are nailed to the following four-point program : (1) more parks whether large or small in every corner throughout the city (2) More community centres for indoor activities. (3) There should be a vigorous program to assist the retarded, the handicapped and senior citizens in all community centres. (4) seek more financial assistance and co-operation from our federal, provincial and civic governments for the development of the proposed projects outlined above.
In seeking public office, Mrs. Chong said she is motivated by a keen interest in our civic affairs. For this reason, she feels she should be given an opportunity to serve. We too, are of the opinion that she is fully qualified to fill the post because she comes with experience, energy and dedication. If she should get the nod of the voters we predict that she will make an outstanding contribution to the park's board.
Since every Chinese Canadian has a stake in our civic government, we should assume our share of responsibility by getting out to vote. In Mrs. Chong we have a clear choice. By making our strength felt, we will be demonstrating that we have finally attained political maturity.
