The demand for the flowers was great, but our hero had more than enough to meet it. By noon on the last day of the year he stopped selling and gave the leftover blooms to the poor. As he went about shopping for clothes and gifts, he distributed money to the beggars. He said to himself: "I must return to my ancestral home to see my elder brother and to ask the privilege of attending the family reunion on New Year's Eve."
Before sunset the young man appeared at the entrance to the ancestral home in fine clothes and with admirable bearing. He bowed deeply to his elder brother and sister-in-law and asked them to forgive his impudence and waywardness. In turn they begged his pardon for having treated him so unkindly as to cause him to run away from home.
As he entered the house he saw it was beautifully decorated for welcoming the New Year. The soft lights of the lamps and candles revealed the radiant countenance of everyone present. A thanksgiving ceremony was performed before the family shrine followed by a delicious reunion dinner. At midnight firecrackers were burned to ward off evil and to welcome the arrival of the New Year.
As he retired to his old bedroom, the tired but happy young man hummed the family ancient song: "Happy union with wife and children is like the mrsic of lutes and harps. When brothers live in concord and peace, the strain of harmony will never cease."
Because he was so overwhelmed with happiness and made wakeful by the sound of firecrackers, he took a stroll in the garden. Soon a perfect silence prevailed around the whole area and all was calm and peaceful. He returned to his room with a heart full of gratitude and a mind filled with the blessing of peace.
Early in the morning on New Year's Day the young man brought to his brother the choicest bloom of unusual yellowish green hue and said, "Last night when all was calm I heard a still small voice saying, 'Man at best is like water at its best. The beautiful (Continued on Page 9)
